was born in Saratov, USSR, into a family of opera singers. He first took up the baton at the age of 12, conducting his school orchestra performing Mozart’s Symphony no. 40, making 2003 the 50th anniversary of his debut. He studied at Leningrad Conservatoire with Nikolai Rabinovich and was Evgeny Mravinsky’s assistant at the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. In January 2003 Maestro Simonov paid tribute to his famous teacher conducting the St. Petersburg Symphony at part of a concert to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mravinsky’s birth...
