Entrato a Napoli nel 1943 con la Quinta Armata, il giovane ufficiale inglese Norman Lewis si trovò stupefatto al centro della città delle signorine e degli sciuscià, scena mobile della prostituzione universale, oltre che di un’arte consumata dell’inventarsi la vita dal nulla. Come non bastasse, fu subito adibito a funzioni di polizia, quindi costretto a constatare ogni giorno le turbolenze, i fantasiosi maneggi e gli imbrogli che si celavano tra vicoli e marina. E capì subito che, di quanto gli accadeva, era il caso di prendere nota. I taccuini che Lewis tenne in quel periodo finirono poi per costituire questo libro, di cui il minimo che si può dire è che mai un occhio tanto sobrio e preciso si era posato su una realtà così naturalmente folle e sgangherata. Pubblicato in Inghilterra nel 1978, Napoli ’44 è stato definito «uno dei dieci libri da salvare sulla seconda guerra mondiale» («The Saturday Review»).
