Internationally renowned DJ and radio personality Gilles Peterson has called upon some of the most exciting names across the jazz, electronic and indie worlds to rework Melanie De Biasio's acclaimed album No Deal, including EELS, The Cinematic Orchestra, Hex, and Seven Davis Junior. EELS haunting, orchestral reworking of opening track I Feel You is the first ever remix by Mark Oliver Everett (AKA E), who fell in love with De Biasio's music when she supported EELS at the Royal Albert Hall in June. The Cinemantic Orchestra give I'm Gonna Leave You an intense reworking, while beat maker C. Crisci, a.k.a Clap! Clap! gives the same track an afro-beat slant. Seven Davis Jr gives title-track No Deal an old school house flavour, while LA's Jonwayne coats With All My Love a lush balm of hip-hop. Japan's Toshio Matsuura (AKA Hex) adds an impressive urgency to The Flow, whilst France's modern classical composer Chassol provides a downtempo and discordant take on Sweet Darling Pain.

Tasteful, subtle and inscrutable, Belgium's Melanie De Biasio and the band have made one of the few modern vocal jazz records. The singer, who also plays flute on the album, which she studied at the Conservatoire Royal De Bruxelles – was born in Charleroi, Belgium, to an Italian family originally from Venice and grew up listening to Maria Callas, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley and Rage Against The Machine. But you wouldn't necessarily infer such diverse influences from No Deal. It's a record that she produced herself and is steeped in the language of blues and jazz. "No Deal" is a dark, transcendent songs that seem to suspend time.

David Bixler may not be a widely familiar name to jazz fans, though he has held the first alto sax chair in the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, but he deserves much wider recognition for this impressive date of his own. Accompanied by trumpeter Scott Wendholt, guitarist John Hart, bassist Ugonna Ugekwo, and drummer Andy Watson, Bixler leads his group through a session of challenging, infectious originals. "Aiding and Abetting" has an amusing, sinister undercurrent built upon its catchy theme, showcasing each of the musicians in turn. The mysterious "Unraveled" has a haunting, somewhat ominous quality with Hart's sinewy guitar. "Game Face" utilizes a complex repeated motif as its root, with inventive countermelodies played against it. "Scratch and Sniff the Jive" is a funky strut where Bixler uses the full range of his instrument. The bittersweet ballad "He Cries Every Day" is pure magic and deserves lyrics if it doesn't already have some. Highly recommended.

Official Release #83. At the time of Frank Zappa's passing in late 1993, he left a number of projects in varying stages of completeness. Some of these had gotten no further than the so-called "build-reel" stage. It was at this preliminary phase that the artist had done little more than set aside various and sundry audio on the back-burner in his Utility Muffin Research Kitchen home studio. One Shot Deal (2008) is a single-CD compilation taken from a number of disparate sources – including a pair of tunes from Zappa's "build reels." As the set's co-producer Gail Zappa explains in her inimitable style in the brief liner notes essay "…the guitar was the main element for me…." With that as an unofficial mandate, the 5-plus minutes – which cover the meaty nine-year span of 1972 to 1981 – is undeniably fret-centric.

Drummer and singer Doug Hammond cut his teeth playing alongside greats like Earl Hooker, Sam and Dave, Sonny Rollins and Nina Simone. During the mid-seventies Hammond even spent a five-year period performing and eventually recording with Charles Mingus. Having spent the past fifteen years laying low in Linz, Austria teaching drumming and composition, Hammond got reacquainted with old friend and Detroit-based jazz pianist Kirk Lightsey and set about making this album.

Making his debut on Chandos, Sakari Oramo, who with the BBC Symphony Orchestra this year has championed new and rarely performed works, presents in surround sound the extravagant musical world of Florent Schmitt. The recording follows two exceptional Barbican performances with the same forces, a sensuous and exotic Antoine et Cléopâtre, according to the Financial Times (2016), and the first performance for nearly a dozen years of Symphony No. 2 (2017).
