Changing bassists (adding Jason "Moose" Harris), but not the bass sound, NMA's next release, The Ghost of Cain, trades a little of its reverb for a MOR album which sold poorly in America. In Great Britan and Germany, however, the band realized a cult following. The sound was further expanded with the addition of Mark Feltham's harmonica on "Poison Street" and "Ballad." "Poison Steet" was released as a 12-inch dance remix and made a dent into that market. "Heroes," another song about the differences between generations is the highlight of the album.

New Model Army make a welcome return with their first full studio album since their acclaimed long-player 'Between Dog and Wolf' kick-started a creative renaissance in 2013. This album saw the band receive the best critical response of their career and garnered top 30 chart positions in UK and Germany. 'Between Dog & Wolf' was shortly followed in 2014 by Matt Reid's fascinating and absorbing documentary feature film 'Between Dog and Wolf: The New Model Army Story' which had a successful run at worldwide film festivals. Its excellent reviews on home entertainment release in turn created further interest in this unique and passionate group who have always remained true to themselves and steadfastly refused to follow any given trends or fashions.

B-Sides and Abandoned Tracks documents the non-LP material from the second LP through the present (the earlier non-LP stuff belongs to an indie label who's already compiled it on another great LP) and it instantly catapults itself over five of the six proper NMA LPs, and gives 1986's The Ghost of Cain a run for its money for the "best-ever NMA LP." No joke, this is a band whose B-sides have been mind-bogglingly great, and this 18-track monster plays start to finish with one truly memorable composition after another; how they could have left some of these off the LPs we'll never understand.

"Strange Brotherhood' was the band's marathon album. They began pooling ideas in late 1994. Three producers, seven studios, two tumours and three long years later it was finished and finally released in April 1998. This was the first album . Unsurprisingly, it's an album full to the brim with different and contrasting musical ideas, the first to feature contributions from Dave Blomberg on guitar and Dean White on Keyboards, while the lyrics range from the politics of the British Road Protest movement (in which Sullivan had been actively involved during 1996) to the deeply personal and sometimes unusually obscure.

The band that could only have been English, steeped as they were in history hundreds of years old, both lauded and derided for their almost fashionably unfashionable clothes and stance, began the '90s with a provocative piece of work. Hailed by some as the heirs to the Clash's mantle, yet apparently out of step with many of their supposed contemporaries in what was the goth movement, the band foraged ahead with music that was individual, confrontational, and intense. Their sound was marked by the use acoustic guitar and a single electric guitar without any major effects.

Joining New Model Army's seminal 1984 debut, Vengeance, with a collection of tracks recorded for BBC Radio 1 around the same time, Small Town England is the ideal representation of the group's pre-Capitol/EMI output. Replete with original bassist Stuart Morrow, who gave singer/guitarist Justin Sullivan's charged anthems a dark, powerful bottom, this two-disc set chronicles a fiery post-punk band on the brink of greatness. Early singles like "Bittersweet" and "Vengeance" are preserved in all their glorious thump (thanks to merciless kitman Rob Heaton), but the real reward for diehards is in the rarely heard radio sessions.

Any day that brings a new NMA album "is a good day." Not only because Justin Sullivan's Bradford, England band has released only 11 proper albums in 29 years (four '80s, three '90s, four 2000s), but because his/their quality control is so ludicrously high. Since 1983's debut "Bittersweet" single, every disc has merited deep appreciation. Never pinned down song to song, let alone album to album or decade to decade, they explore a cornucopia of historic rock influence, yet their albums don't feel like shuffle play.

Sacrificing the experimental post-punk doodling that worked so well within defined songs on the first LP Vengeance strangely enough works here for this incredible band that won't hear any malarkey about how bad second LPs are supposed to be. A more direct approach works wonders, rendering every song a possible single, every one a flaming, emotion-wracked foray into human thoughts, customs, and politics. And Slade the Leveler's got some unparalleled British lyrics for this kind of statement-oriented music and tremendous songwriting on side one.
