The Nashville Cast is just that, a loose configuration of actors, singers, and musicians who are part of the cast of the ABC television series Nashville, which had its debut on October 10, 2012. The series chronicles the lives of various fictional movers and shakers swept up in Nashville's music industry, and the songs they sing, write, sell, and share are a big part of the show's appeal. The various songs and performances, both covers and originals, are part of an ongoing release series handled by Big Machine Records, and in the spring of 2014, it was announced that members of the cast, although not its two major stars, Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, would be touring and performing shows together leading up to the show's second season finale in the second week of May. Among those participating in this mini four-city tour were Charles Esten, Clare Bowen, Jonathan Jackson, Sam Palladio, Chris Carmack, and Will Chase. The cast topped off their second season with the release of a Christmas album in 2014.

Life is a science fiction horror film directed by Daniel Espinosa which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds. The film follows a crew aboard the International Space Station as they study a sample of organic matter brought by a space probe returning from Mars. Their studies verify the sample is the first proof of extraterrestrial life, but the experiments backfire as the organism gains intelligence and begins growing rapidly. Trapped aboard the ISS, the crew must find out how to kill the being before it escapes to Earth. The original soundtrack to Life was composed by director Espinosa’s frequent collaborator Jon Ekstrand (Easy Money, Child 44). Ekstrand has crafted a score which sets an ominous mood for the film which builds expertly before giving way to the sheer terror of being pursued in an isolated otherworldly environment. This release is not to be missed.

Folks, let's get one thing straight. The at-times charmingly bad, humorous, or excellent soundtrack to Robert Altman's groundbreaking and influential Nashville isn't to be taken at face value throughout. There's a blizzard's chance in Tullahoma County that you'll get a proper grip of it without the context of the film itself. The film is a vivid look at the cult of celebrity and power, tracing the actions of a couple dozen characters throughout five days in the country music capital. With numerous performances by these figures that go hand in hand with the environs, the film is just as much a musical as it is a realistic slice of the American South, circa 1974. As much of the performances captured in the film are by local amateurs, the material isn't always top level. That's why it succeeds – it's realistic. As the director himself assesses in the liner notes to the MCA Nashville reissue from 2000, "We weren't trying to write 'great' songs. We aimed to meet the spectrum of songs coming out of the Nashville scene." Spectrum is the key word here – the quality of the material and the range of emotions within are extremely broad.

Fame was a film directed by Alan Parker, a serious auteur (some would say overly serious, especially in light of the work that came later) who designed the film for posterity, and the same attitude carried over the music. Yes, the production techniques often do sound dated – the over-reliance on state-of-the-art synthesizer ironically now sounds helplessly tied to the year of its creation – but the music by Michael Gore is dynamic, varied, and alive, sung with real passion and vigor, and it still retains its essential spark 23 years after it was a pop culture phenomenon. Sure, it's glitzy and glossy, sounding like show tunes, but that's the tradition of this music, and it was done better than most Broadway tunes and movie soundtracks of the '80s. Years later, this still has the spark and vitality of kids trying to make their big break, no matter the kind of music they're singing, and that's one of the main reasons (along with Gore's fine compositions) Fame retains its power and entertainment value years later.

Isaac Hayes both starred in and composed the double album soundtrack for the 1974 film Truck Turner, directed by Jonathan Kaplan. Quentin Tarantino made this music famous again, 30 years later, when he reused parts of the score in his Kill Bill movies.
