AvaxHome Tribute to MOTÖRHEAD

I got rock 'n' roll, to save me from the gold
And if that's all there is, it ain't so bad

Motörhead, is a long-lived and iconic British heavy metal band formed in 1975 by former roadie for Jimi Hendrix, bassist, singer and songwriter Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister. They are widely recognized as progenitors of thrash & speed metal, a fusion of heavy metal and what was soon to become hardcore punk. Consequently they influenced countless rock, punk rock, and heavy metal bands that followed. Usually a power trio, Motörhead had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, its follow on, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith, cemented Motörhead’s reputation as one of Britain’s foremost heavy metal groups. While Motörhead are typically classified as heavy metal, speed metal or thrash metal (and often regarded as a foundational influence on the latter two styles); Lemmy dislikes such labels, preferring to describe the band’s music simply as “Rock and Roll”…

This collection of Motörhead doing other people’s songs covers most of the bases of a band who were always happy to thunder through a cover (soundtracks, tributes, B-sides, even if it was rare to see them do covers live; I remember a Ramones tune at the House Of Blues when Joey Ramone died, but not many more). There’s a demo version of The Ramones’ Rockaway Beach included here, which is as scratchy and worn as you might imagine and, remarkably, lacks any of that patented, and much missed, Motörhead kick.

With a list of hits to die for and three decades on the road, Motörhead are nothing short of a phenomenon; without doubt one of the hardest-rocking acts Britain has ever produced. This stunning compilation presents Lemmy and Co.'s finest moments, but be advised that it's definitely not for the faint-hearted. After all, this is the band who said, “If we moved in next door to you, your lawn would die!”

Motörhead's overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal was one of the most groundbreaking styles the genre had to offer in the late '70s. Though the group's leader, Lemmy Kilmister, had his roots in the hard-rocking space rock band Hawkwind, Motörhead didn't bother with his old group's progressive tendencies, choosing to amplify the heavy biker rock elements of Hawkwind with the speed of punk rock. Motörhead wasn't punk rock – they formed before the Sex Pistols and they loved the hell-for-leather imagery of bikers too much to conform with the safety-pinned, ripped T-shirts of punk – but they were the first metal band to harness that energy and, in the process, they created speed metal and thrash metal. Unlike many of their contemporaries, Motörhead continued performing into the next century. Although they changed their lineup many, many times – Lemmy was their only consistent member – they never changed their raging sound.

Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers is the first book to celebrate the classic-era Motörhead lineup of Lemmy Kilmister, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor. Through interviews with all of the principal troublemakers, Martin Popoff celebrates the formation of the band and the records that made them legends: Motörhead, Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, and Iron Fist. An in-depth coda brings the story up to date with the shocking recent deaths of Taylor and Kilmister.
