Gary Lucas – charmingly oddball pop songwriter, musical world traveler, utterly hellacious guitarist – is perhaps at his most hellaciously, charmingly cosmopolitan on this frankly amazing album, which finds him adapting popular Chinese songs that were originally recorded in the 1960s and which he heard and fell in love with during a sojourn in Taiwan in the mid-'70s. His girlfriend at the time had a cassette tape of such local superstars as Chow Hsuan and Bai Kwong, and it was, he says in his liner notes, "like almost no other music I had ever heard before." Twenty-five years later he put together this quirkily gorgeous tribute, which includes jaw-droppingly virtuosic fingerstyle guitar arrangements ("Mad World," "Wall") and song settings using guest vocalists. Among the best of the latter are the limpidly beautiful "Night in Shanghai" (again, note the guitar playing) and the country-flavored "I Wait for Your Return," which is simply a hoot. He's not playing this stuff for laughs, though; his genuine affection for the music comes through loud and clear, and even when he has fun with it he is obviously trying to do so in a way that brings its haunting loveliness to the fore. Very highly recommended.

When he released "Bitches Brew" in 1970, Miles Davis opened up a new angle to jazz which stirred up emotions like no other record before. Some critics accused Davis of selling out, while the public bought it like crazy. It is one of the most examined albums of all time, even garnering a box set of the sessions. To date, "Bitches Brew" is one of the top selling jazz albums of all time. "Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue" examines the next step in the creative process…performing these songs live. The 1970 Isle of Wight featured an array of performers from The Who to Jethro Tull to Joni Mitchell. With improvisation playing a big role in the performance, the band (Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Gary Bartz and Dave Holland) had to be "on", yet ready to change on the fly. Directed by award-winning producer Murray Lerner, "Miles Electric" sits down with several of the performers who played with Miles, interspersed with his 1970 Isle of Wight performance, as well as artists such as Carlos Santana and Joni Mitchell, who describe the impact Miles Davis had towards music.

The 2CD set Nudity features The Lost Radle Tapes, which are said to be tapes made from the monitor by or for Carl Radle from the time the sessions were done. If they were reference tapes, it is uncertain if they were actually direct feeds or a microphone recording from studio monitors, which most of it sounds like. Nonetheless, it is a chance to hear the Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs in a way that was never heard, even on The Layla Sessions box set. Speaking of the box, the packaging of Nudity is made to look and feel like the box set, down to the style of fonts used. The last five songs are every existing mix made for the song "Layla", from the original mix with separated stereo mixing to a mastering made by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) to an edit made for a Japanese 3 inch CD. Five mixes of "Layla" total. The three instrumental jam sessions are major highlights too.

Ever since the mid-'90s, that Glenn Hughes has been one busy gentleman. After sorting out his personal life, Hughes returned to recording and touring like a man possessed as he began cranking out album after album in a short period of time – including 2003's Songs in the Key of Rock. And for those who thought that Hughes may begin mellowing after the aforementioned "downtime," the rip-roaring album opener, "In My Blood" (in which Hughes sounds quite a bit like ex-Deep Purple bandmate David Coverdale) will silence any doubters.

Village Recorders Tapes is a recorded jam session between American band Santana and British man Eric Clapton. It is notabie for featuring a new guitarist in Santana's band, 16-year old Neal Schon. Schon impressed everyone and Clapton liked him enough to want to bring him in within Derek And The Dominos. One thing didn't lead to another but it did turn into some wonderful music together.
