Including tracks from her early-'60s period at Roulette, Ballads is a collection aimed at casual fans of Dinah Washington, one of the most bewitching vocalists of the jazz era. Granted, this wasn't the peak of her career; she only recorded five records with the label, most of them shortly before her death. Contrary to the thoughts of jazz critics, though, Washington was still singing with strength and subtlety, and the compilers deftly build the theme of an ongoing relationship with this sequence of standards. Beginning with the dreamy "Lover Man," Ballads progresses through the first blush of a love affair ("I Didn't Know About You") and takes in a few highs ("If It's the Last Thing I Do") along with plenty of lows ("He's Gone Again," "What's New?," "These Foolish Things," "Baby Won't You Please Come Home"). The arrangements are smooth and occasionally overly maudlin, but the assured voice of Dinah Washington triumphs in every setting.

While this collection of ballads from past Klugh releases has many pleasant moments, it's so pastoral and calming that each song fades into another one without making much impression. As background music, they're effective. Klugh's solos are well constructed, marvelously articulated, and his lines and phrasing sublime. The material covers an impressive range of genres, from jazz to pop, originals and standards. Those who enjoy untaxing material should find this another delightful Klugh collection; others seeking visceral fare should look elsewhere.

"Pictures of a City" seems meant to pick up where "20th Century Schizoid Man" left off, with it's furious ensemble passages, knotty Fripp guitar leads and Greg Lake's authoritative vocal. "Cadence and Cascade" helps fill out the ballad quotient with a beautiful, wispy vocal from transitional singer Gordon Haskell. A valuable note of humor is interjected into the proceedings via the jokey, off-handedly jazzy "Cat Food." Keith Tippet's piano and Mel Collins' sax–both soon to play larger roles–were introduced on POSEIDON as well.

Like its predecessor, Gentle Ballads, Gentle Ballads, Vol. 2 is another fairly low-key session led by Eric Alexander. Not only is the personnel identical (pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth), but the cover art once again features a nude photo by the late Jeanloup Sieff, quite possibly the same model from the same photo shoot. The tenor saxophonist mixes things up a bit more during this 2006 session, playing ballads that were hits for popular singers ("Mona Lisa" and "I'm a Fool to Want You"), 1960s Broadway ("Who Can I Turn To"), and 1960s pop ("The Look of Love"), in addition to the expected standards. Best are the deliberate take of Duke Ellington's timeless melancholy ballad "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" and a bluesy, loping treatment of Neal Hefti's "Li'l Darlin'," which became a signature piece for Count Basie. The John Coltrane influence is again apparent, though Alexander isn't a mere clone, even if this enjoyable date falls short of being groundbreaking.
