Lux Aeterna is an orchestral work in five movements, with featured parts of trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg and Rypdal himself. It is filled with that curious melancholy which distinguishes contemporary Nordic music on both sides of the jazz-classical divide: trailing wisps of melody and harmonies moving with glacial slowness. But then, just as you are beginning to lose patience with it, in comes Mikkelborg's trumpet, with a tone half-note and half-breath, and the effect is utterly magical. And that is as close as I can get to answering the question of whether this is jazz or not. Just be patient and listen.

Recognised on the international scene and by her peers as a major artist, for her debut on the Aparté label, the Swiss pianist Béatrice Berrut gives us a highly intimate vision of Johann Sebastian Bach's music. For this, she is accompanied by a Bösendorfer piano prototype and the microphones of Nicolas Bartholomée, set up in the setting of Flagey, a multi-disciplinary arts centre in Brussels.

Both Ligeti and Heppener belong to the generation born in the 1920s which formed the basis for the post-war avant-garde. Lux Aeterna, used by Stanley Kubrick in his film 2001: A Space Odyssey, marked the installation of a new musical language.
The later Sonata for solo viola simultaneously evokes the polyphony of the fourteenth century and certain varieties of ethnic music. Im Gestein, a cycle of lieder to poems by Paul Celan which won Heppener the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize in 1993, is here recorded for the first time.

This Ligeti entry in the Deutsch Grammophon (DG) 20th Century Classics series was one of the first Ligeti CDs. It remains a fine single-disc introduction to Ligeti, one of the greatest of late 20th century composers. These works are all from Ligeti's 1960s prime when he was exploring micropolyphony. If you never heard anything else, you would have a good basic sense of what Ligeti's contribution was to the late 20th century avant-garde. Included are "Lux Aeterna," the eerie choral work from 1962, made famous for its inclusion in Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," and the String Quartet No. 2 from 1968, performed by the LaSalle Quartet. I think the Arditti Quartet surpassed the LaSalles with their Sony recording found in the "Ligeti Edition, Vol. 1," but this version is superb in its own right. The other three pieces are performed by the Ensemble InterContemporain, led by Pierre Boulez – "Ramifications," (1968-1969) "Chamber Concerto" (1970-1971) and the very strange vocal "Aventures" (1962-1965).
