Otis Rush and Buddy Guy live at the fifth annual Chicago Blues Festival on June 10th, 1988. Given the Windy City's rich blues legacy, it may be surprising to learn that this was only the fifth occasion on which the hugely influential genre was celebrated on one of its true home turfs. As it was, Chicago's 1988 Blues Festival played host to a dazzling showcase of past and present icons. Like Buddy Guy, the wider neglect of Otis Rush's work would eventually give way to a renaissance and built on that, an entire revival by the mid-1980s. Two pathfinders, as unique and important in their own ways as Waters, Wolf and Walter, would finally receive the critical acclaim they so richly deserved. Professionally re-mastered.

Dreamtime: Image-wise, the Cult still weren't entirely there yet, as the band photos show. Ian Astbury's bandana is more dated than anything else. But it's Billy Duffy's look – a Duran Duran/Spandau Ballet wannabe, down to the haircut and suit – which is terribly amusing in context. Musically, though, on their full-length debut, the Cult were pretty much on their way. Duffy's dramatic, spaghetti Western-tinged, dark psychedelic guitar and Astbury's passionate semi-wailing set the tone from the start and throughout, while the Jamie Stewart/Nigel Preston rhythm section keeps the tribal/goth feeling running equally high.

An astonishing record of James and the Flames tearing the roof off the sucker at the mecca of R&B theatres, New York's Apollo. When King Records owner Syd Nathan refused to fund the recording, thinking it commercial folly, Brown single-mindedly proceeded anyway, paying for it out of his own pocket. He had been out on the road night after night for a while, and he knew that the magic that was part and parcel of a James Brown show was something no record had ever caught. Hit follows hit without a pause – "I'll Go Crazy," "Try Me," "Think," "Please Please Please," "I Don't Mind," "Night Train," and more. The affirmative screams and cries of the audience are something you've never experienced unless you've seen the Brown Revue in a Black theater. If you have, I need not say more; if you haven't, suffice to say that this should be one of the very first records you ever own.

This is one of the best post-stroke Oscar Peterson sessions in the catalog, thanks in great part to the distinguished company he keeps (Ray Brown and Milt Jackson) and the stimulating atmosphere of the live setting (New York's Blue Note club). Right from the first track, "Ja-Da," you can tell that this is going to be a fun session, as the slippery, swinging, totally interlocked, totally assured way in which these vets react to each other kicks in immediately. Peterson's right hand is fleet, feathery in touch, and bluesy in feel; the left providing just enough punctuation, and at 75, Jackson's bluesy eloquence had not diminished in the least. Ray Brown's time and placement of notes is, as usual, impeccable, and the very talented drummer in his group at the time, Karriem Riggins, provides a swinging kick for the quartet…

If you weren’t fortunate enough to make it to this concert - or even if you were - this has to be one of Billy’s best gigs and one of the best documented. None of that holding your mobile over your head and annoying everyone else behind you, then missing it all and having a wobbly, screechy video that no one wants to see again. This is a multi-camera epic recorded in stunning 5.1 surround sound make you feel like you were sat in seat 3B and that if you shout ‘Play A New England’ loud enough, Billy might hear you - he’d still ignore you but it’s the thought that counts.

Recorded in January of 1977 at Montreal’s legendary Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club, the record features some of Muddy’s greatest bandmates, including Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson and “Steady Rollin’” Bob Margolin on guitar, Jerry Portnoy on harmonica, Pinetop Perkins on piano, along with Calvin Jones on bass and Willie Smith on drums. The band are terrific throughout which is why it is no surprise that they, like many others, went on to have outside recognition after playing with Muddy’s band. The standout track is an 11 minute version of the classic, “Kansas City,” in which Muddy shares vocals with Perkins.

Live At The Festival Hall is a bootleg album by The Beatles of their show at the Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia. It was made to look like an official Parlophone record, making people assume it was a real piece of their discography but it is not, but the recording is a decent soundboard recording.
