Country, Singer-Songwriter

Canadian country singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist Lindsay Ell was born in Calgary, Alberta on March 20, 1989. Music was it for her from the beginning, and she started playing piano at the age of six, switched to guitar at eight, and by ten she was writing songs and perfecting her guitar skills at bluegrass camps, soaking up all the country music she could. By the time she met Randy Bachman when she was 13 years old, Ell had developed into a dynamite electric guitar player with a sweet and easy country pop vocal style, a female counterpart to guitar-slinging country artists like Keith Urban and Brad Paisley.

(Jazzman, Anne Ramade).

Lindsay Ell is 60 percent excited, and 40 percent terrified of releasing The Project, her new studio album. “It is the album I’ve always wanted to make but more so it’s the album I didn’t know I could make,” she says during a visit to the Taste of Country studio. Opinions aside, anyone who has heard the 12-song, country-blues mix can be excused for needing a hand to lift a dropped jaw. This is not the Lindsay Ell we’ve known in Nashville for a half-decade.

Arto Lindsay is the least known romantic to ever pick up a guitar, in part because he has never learned to play it. Since yowling his way through the seminal no wave outfit DNA, Lindsay has united his vocation and avocation: abstract noise and tropicália balladry. His career is a fascinating and often rewarding study in contradictions. As half of Ambitious Lovers for much of the 1980s, Lindsay didn’t sing so much as talk delicately, examining the structure of a song like a prowler testing a window over Peter Scherer’s keyboard blasts over several albums.

Ballads have been a source of inspiration for Lindsay Straw since her childhood in Montana, but she truly grew into the art while studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There she began to tie together the threads of the traditions she was most passionate аbout: English, Scottish, Irish and American songcraft. She also founded a young Celtic trad band at the college, The Ivy Leaf, which she draws from to fill out the music on her new album, "The Fairest Flower of Womankind". In addition to her own sensitive, agile accompaniment on guitar and bouzouki, Straw is joined by members of The Ivy Leaf, Daniel Accardi (fiddle, accordion), Armand Aromin (fiddle), and Benedict Gagliardi (concertina, harmonica), plus renowned Maine guitarist Owen Marshall (The Press Gang). Throughout, Straw’s tender vocals and careful arrangements draw out the inner depths of these old songs, telling tales of women from beyond the ages. A ballad needs commitment to be told, a belief in the importance of its story. Straw proves that these stories ring with inspiration even today.

Arto Lindsay has come a long way since his early days as one of the prime architects of downtown New York's no wave sound, a period when he played untuned guitar in the noise trio DNA and served as the first vocalist for the Golden Palominos. Since then he's been a fairly ubiquitous guest artist and has pursued his own interest in the music of Brazil (where he was raised), as well as taking a detour into slightly avant-garde dance-pop with the group Ambitious Lovers. His solo work in recent years has gotten a bit mushy, perhaps, but Prize finds him tightening things up. The drum'n'bass textures that lay on the surface of his last album like laminate are more fully integrated this time out: "Prefeelings" combines a fractured breakbeat with salsa-fied acoustic guitar and saxophones; "Resemblances" smears subtle intimations of electronic mayhem under Latin percussion and guitar, while Lindsay sings lines like "Stay calm/Keep calm/Let the room outgrow the walls" in a dry, laconic voice. None of this is anywhere near as tuneful as his work with Ambitious Lovers, but there's a maturity to it that will keep you coming back for more.
