Latin Music, Dance, Reggaeton

While it takes influences from hip hop and Jamaican dancehall, reggaeton is not precisely the Hispanic or Latin American version of either of these genres; reggaeton has its own specific beat and rhythm, whereas Latin hip hop is simply hip hop recorded by artists of Latino descent. The specific "riddim" that characterizes reggaeton is referred to as "Dembow"! Soca has evolved in the last 20 years primarily through musicians from various Anglophone Caribbean countries including Trinidad, Barbados, Grenada, Saint Lucia. The nineties in Dominica have been dominated by a new musical form called bouyon music. Bouyon emerged from the attempt of the new generation bands like Windward Caribbean Kulture (WCK) to develop their own style.

Miloš Karadaglic, or Miloš for short, is from Montenegro, a more promising locale than you might think for Latin music. Check out some of the old tango recordings from this part of the world sometime. Miloš has matinee idol looks, and for this, his sophomore release (released under two titles, Latino and Pasión), he pursues a dual track: he goes for broad crossover effects while at the same time displaying impeccable technique and exploring unusual enough repertory to attract guitar buffs…

The Manhattan Jazz Quintet are an unusual group in that they very rarely perform as a unit in the United States (much less Manhattan) but have been a major hit in Japan, both for their recordings and occasional tours. Originally comprised of leader/pianist David Matthews, trumpeter Lew Soloff, tenor saxophonist George Young, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Steve Gadd, the band (which emphasizes straight-ahead hard bop swinging) first came together in 1983 at the suggestion of the King label and the top Japanese jazz magazine Swing Journal.
