La Petite Bande recorded its set during the late 1970s and these are performances which do considerable justice to the music. Brisker tempos, lighter bass string playing and an altogether more imaginative approach to continuo realization bring these concertos alive to an extent hardly realised by I Musici. Sigiswald Kuijken, the leader and director of La Petite Bande, includes a theorbo in his continuo group and this is invariably an effective addition. Both sets field a secure and lively concertino group of two violins, cello and continuo but listeners may well find that the warmer sound and greater degree of finesse provided by the concertino of I Musici is more to their liking than the thinner, wirier textures of the other. Having said that, I should add that in matters of baroque style, as in its more highly developed spirit of fantasy, La Petite Bande offers far and away the more satisfying performances.

With the success of projects like Azimuth and recent recordings on ECM with the likes of Peter Erskine and Jan Garbarek it’s not hard to justify the statement that John Taylor was one of the worlds finest musicians. ‘Pause…’ was his first ever LP as leader and originally appeared on the Turtle label in 1971 produced by John Surman. It captures an artist at the outset of his musical explorations and certainly stands the test of time. With an all star British line up the CD confirms what a talent he was even then, as the recording has become a favourite of many modern jazz aficionados and a must for all collectors.

Son is half Vietnamese and half African-American. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Son's mother tried to find his father, an officer, so Son could go to America. She cannot find him and Son is taken away by the new regime to live in a work camp in the mountains near Cambodia. There can be no escape from these dread camps. After several years without contact, Martijn visits his sister Daantje, who just started to live on her own in Amsterdam. He tells her he is going to make a documentary from her life, and enters her home live with a video camera. This creates tension between Daantje and her brother because he wants to recall something that happened between them in the past. To keep Martijn at a distance, Daantje starts a relationship with Ramón, but Martijn gets between them. He manages to talk to her so that she remembers the things that happened when they were kids. This helps him to overcome his obsession for his sister, and after playing over their history, he is finally able to see her without the video camera like he did during the course of the movie.
