Philadelphia's John the Conqueror are still in full command of their blues power on their second album, The Good Life, and what they did well on their self-titled debut they do very well here. Guitarist Pierre Moore's tough, wiry guitar figures take the traditions of blues-rock and give them a strenuous workout without playing them for too much flash, and drummer Michael Gardner and bassist Ryan Lynn are a powerful rhythm section who get the job done with lots of force and plenty of groove.

Approaching our 50th anniversary we have been toying with the idea of releasing a box set to celebrate this special occasion. For the new album we invited the original Wild Blues guys from 1970: Charles van den Heuvel (piano), Fred Huissen (drums), Charles van der Steeg (tenor saxophone) and co-founder Jos de Wilde (slide). Great to see everyone invited was still playing and still had the blues feel from the early days. Even after all those years it felt like they never left the band. Most of the tracks were recorded live in one take, just like the good old Wild Blues days. The results can be heard on the new double album “50 & Beyond”.

Tremoluxe has the fat, dirty guitar tone and the loud snare drums of the blues-rock genre, but Studebaker John Grimaldi is not just another Stevie Ray Vaughan wanna-be. Instead Grimaldi more closely resembles the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Jimmie Vaughan in his utter devotion to the groove. And it's that devotion that allows "Tremoluxe" to rise above the humdrum state of blues-rock today and demand attention with its hypnotic boogie rhythms.

Outside Lookin' In finds Studebaker John perfecting his overdriven, propulsive Chicago blues. His originals may not always be memorable, but they're sturdy vehicles for his hard-driving harmonica and gutsy guitar. Studebaker hasn't changed his style at all – essentially, this is the same album he's delivered before, and he made several others like it afterward – but this is the one that features his best playing.

As superstition and fear sweep the Middle Ages, an educated rogue named Hopkins (Price) wanders from town to town proclaiming to be an official witchfinder. Town leaders pay him to accuse and then execute – usually innocent – suspects. But when a brave solider returns home to find his sweetheart on the rack, ready to burn, Hopkins realizes he may have whacked his last witch.
