"Ice on Fire", released in November 1985, is the nineteenth official album release for Elton John. Recorded at Sol Studios, it was his first album since 1976' "Blue Moves" produced by his original long-time producer, Gus Dudgeon, who was responsible for John's success in that timespan, but it was met with little praise, and only reached #48 on the US charts, although it reached #3 in the UK. George Michael, then of Wham!, appears on two tracks on the album: "Nikita" and "Wrap Her Up".

A bit funky, a bit bluesy – and one of the only 70s albums we've ever seen from guitarist John White – a player with a feel that's a bit more laidback and loose than some of his contemporaries on the Mainstream label! The style here is somewhere between work by David T Walker and Freddie Robinson – some of the rougher edges of the latter, but more of the focus of the former – set up nicely in some west coast backings that feature work from Merl Saunders on organ, Hadley Caliman on tenor, Sonny Red on alto, and Phil Wilson on drums. There's an edge to some of the best tracks here that you wouldn't expect – especially in comparison to other Mainstream Records sessions – and titles include "Granite and Concrete", "Help Us Out", "Right Off", "City", "Tried To Touch", and "Number 3."

This is a prime example of an informal studio jam session in the critical period when John Coltrane was perfecting his 'sheets of sound' approach. The emerging tenor star is the focal point in a quintet filled with serendipitous connections. Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, and Paul Chambers were at the forefront of an emerging generation of young Detroit modernists; Burrell, Coltrane, and Flanagan had proved their compatibility a year earlier on The Cats (OJC-079); and Jimmy Cobb was poised to become a regular partner of Coltrane and Chambers in the Miles Davis sextet. The tenor/guitar duet 'Why Was I Born?' is a unique gem in an album filled with assured and eloquent blowing.

By the time of the Antibes Jazz Festival in mid-1965, A Love Supreme was years from general recognition as a masteripiece. A French musician and record company executive, Jeff Gilson, had heard an advance copy and asked Coltrane to play the piece. Radio France broadcast the concert and recorded it. this is that performance of all four parts believed to be the only time the quartet played it for a live audience.

This is a truly great operetta interpretation. Gardiner's approach is on an altogether more inspired plane than his rivals. In the Viennese rhythms, he shows himself utterly at home – as in the Act 2 Dance scene, where he eases the orchestra irresistibly into the famous waltz. But there are also countless instances where Gardiner provides a deliciously fresh inflexion to the score.
