Duo Ahlert & Schwab have dedicated themselves, through their choice of instruments, to one of the smallest repertoires to be found in the classical music pantheon, that for guitar and mandolin. On this Naxos' effort, Daniel Ahlert plays the mandolin, and Birgit Schwab takes Baroque guitar and archlute parts in works of Sylvius Leopold Weiss and Giovanni Hoffmann. Being German, they identify Giovanni Hoffmann under the wholly inauthentic name of "Johann Hoffmann," which can lead to some confusion.
This is an album you will not regret to have slipped into your CD after listening. It Schwab Soro, released on Neuklang label, reflects the light exchange between two musicians who have found to agree. If bassist Raphael Schwab and saxophonist Julien Soro know in recent years, from the Conservatory until guitarist Fred Maurin, Ping Machine group, they decided to work on a more personal project, in this unusual duo (though .. ..) perfect setup that serves some idea of improvisation in a not devoid of humor and poetry adventure.
Sigi Schwab composed music for countless TV sequels, films, theater, ballett, performances and chamber music. He is the only European guitarist being awarded the "Ovation Award". Besides the Classical Ensemble, the Diabelli Trio and the Percussion Academia (until Guillermo Marchena died in 1994) Sigi Schwab now performs with the Percussion Project. This is a real beautiful live recording – a masterpiece of acoustic music with influences from all over the world !
