Carroll was a New York poet living in California when punk exploded in the late 1970s. He rightly sensed that punk was as much a lyrical stance as a musical one. Inspired by contemporaries like Patti Smith and Richard Hell, Carroll found himself a band and started spewing his literate and often fatalistic verse over a solid 4/4 beat. His surprise 1980 hit "People Who Died" sounded both shocking and exciting as it roared out of bored radios all across America. The rest of this guitar-heavy set including the classic "Wicked Gravity" and the previously unreleased "Differing Touch" paints similarly edgy portraits of lurkers and fringe dwellers. The rote rock backing occasionally gets a little tepid, but Carroll's bitter-junkie tongue burns throughout.

Very loosely based on the memoir of the same name, The Basketball Diaries transposes the late '60s adolescence of writer/artist Jim Carroll to some unspecified time period at least 15 years later, further confusing the timeframe with three decades of rock music, some by Carroll himself. Jim (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his Catholic school chums are on the hottest basketball team in New York, but their friend Bobby (Michael Imperioli) languishes in the hospital with leukemia. In-between typically boyish adventures, Jim scribbles in his notebook and experiments with sex and drugs. His group of friends begins to disintegrate after coach Swifty (Bruno Kirby) not only makes a pass at Jim, but also catches him and his pals using drugs on the court and kicks them off the team. Out of school and on the streets, Jim turns tricks, betrays friends, robs stores, and deals drugs to feed his heroin addiction. Not even the efforts of former addict Reggie (Ernie Hudson) can cure Jim.

Long considered a classic and a revelation to listeners who had taken guitarist Jim Hall for granted, this set of duets with bassist Ron Carter (reissued on CD) has near-telepathic communication between the two musicians and quiet music full of inner tension and fire. Hall and Carter brought in an original apiece and also collaborated on six standards, including "St. Thomas," "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," "Autumn Leaves," and "Alone Together." Introspective and thought-provoking music.

Renamed the Jon Tiven Group (formerly Jon Tiven's Ego Trip), his second album finds him once again walking the fine line between blues and soul music. With guest appearances from Simon Kirke, Jim Carroll, Peter Wolf, Billy Ray Martin, and Sir Mack Rice, Tiven splits the album between soul tunes and blues with a smattering of rock & roll to spice things up. Like the first album, Tiven wrote most of this with Don Covay, Jim Carroll, and Mick Taylor with the exception of an unreleased Van Morrison tune, "If You Rock Me." A solid effort. Alan Merrill sings.

What seemed to have been fanciful exaggeration has since been transformed into spectacular reality. Diahann Carroll has made the entertainment world her personal province. A highly combustible diversification of her talent is deceptively packaged in this slim, dark-eyed, stunning young woman. Since her notable debut, at 19, in the Harold Arlen - Truman Capote musical "House Of Flowers", this regal young lady has become not only a singer of refreshing originality, but at the same time she has matured into a persuasive stage personality and a convincing motion picture actress. Here, in Nobody Sees Me Cry, she makes her record album debut.

In a deeply personal film, writer and comedian Brendan O'Carroll, star of Mrs Brown's Boys, tells the story of the Irish Easter Rising. A hundred years ago, in Easter week 1916, 1,600 Irish rebels took over the centre of Dublin. Despite overwhelming odds, the rebels held out against the forces of the British Empire for six days until they were shelled into submission. Three of those rebels were Brendan's uncles. Now, on the centenary of the revolt, Brendan tells the dramatic story of the Rising and looks into the part his family played in it. He explores how the Rising, though a complete military failure, sent shock waves through the British Empire and signalled the birth of today's Republic of Ireland.
