It is easy to misconstrue a name, especially when it is so obviously tied to politics and racial identity. Born during an important period of Black identity in the arts in the early 2010s, Black Art Jazz Collective brings together an accomplished ensemble of young African American musicians who felt that it was necessary to celebrate Black culture in a positive way. The focus on camaraderie between members who grew up playing music together comes through in their music. The Collective was co-founded by drummer Johnathan Blake, saxophonist Wayne Escoffery and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. All graduating from esteemed music programs in the Northeast at the same time, the three quickly became ingrained in the New York jazz scene as leaders and invaluable members of ensembles led by legends like Tom Harrell, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter and Ron Carter.

It would be only to mention the name of John Coltrane and you cause the whole world of fantasies and of feelings, even to the most recalcitrant and to the most uninterested. Coltrane, that some people consider to be a God of music and of improvisation, inspires the deepest respect for a work without concession, marked by a deep research of spirituality. He was, after Charlie Parker in 1940 and on 1950, considered to be the revolutionariest and the most influential saxophonist of the history of the jazz, leader of the common avant-gardist in 1960s, and one of the most important artists of the music of the second half of the 20th century. John Coltrane always tried to surpass himself on all plans: technology, by exploring new modes of expression, searching new tones, new stamps and of new ways of spreading the tessiture and the dynamics of its instrument.

Recorded in January of 1977 at Montreal’s legendary Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club, the record features some of Muddy’s greatest bandmates, including Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson and “Steady Rollin’” Bob Margolin on guitar, Jerry Portnoy on harmonica, Pinetop Perkins on piano, along with Calvin Jones on bass and Willie Smith on drums. The band are terrific throughout which is why it is no surprise that they, like many others, went on to have outside recognition after playing with Muddy’s band. The standout track is an 11 minute version of the classic, “Kansas City,” in which Muddy shares vocals with Perkins.

2008 digitally remastered two CD set featuring a superb performance by the last edition of the Bill Evans Trio. Less than a year before his death, Bill Evans traveled to Madrid, Spain, to play three nights at a small venue called the Balboa Jazz Club. One of those magic nights was recorded and appears here in its entirety. The music from the December 12, 1979 Balboa concert was privately recorded and the sound quality leaves much to be desired. However, the music has been reprocessed and sounds better here than on any previous release.
