Lisa Velez's last name was forgotten after the single "I Wonder If I Take You Home" elevated Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam into the national spotlight. Her voice had the perfect mix of uncertainty, irony, and edge, while Full Force's production was state-of-the-art for the time. There was also a fine ballad on the album, "All Cried Out," presenting Lisa Lisa's vulnerable side, and is arguably still her finest performance. Lisa Lisa and company eventually earned a platinum album and were on their way.

Drummer Chico Hamilton, who is still going strong at age 91, is a truely unique visionary. In 1955, when jazz was beginning to flourish in many different directions, Hamilton made history by adopting an entirely new quintet format which includes a single reed instrument, guitar, cello, bass and drums. The cellist Fred Katz, who would mostly play with the bow, was considered as one of the "front" players. Youg reed player Paul Horn was the second horn player of the group who replaced the inaugural member Buddy Collette. The main part of this compilation album, released in 1963, is the four tracks (Track 5 through 8) by that edition of the Chico Hamilton Quintet. The rest are taken from two earlier recording sessions. Tracks 1 and 2 were recorded in 1956 and features Hamilton's trio with the young Jim Hall, who was 25 years old at the time, and George Duvivier. Tracks 3 and 4 were recorded in 1954 with Howard Roberts and Duvivier.

Back Street Crawler, despite being Paul Kossoff's first post-Free album, contains contributions from all members of that band. "Molten Gold," the most accessible song on the album, features the talent of Free vocalist Paul Rodgers, and is an overlooked shoulda-been hit. Otherwise, the album is highlighted by Kossoff's blues- and rock-based guitar…

Paul Kossoff is the finest player of a rock instrument I have heard. I had nothing else with him playing when I bought this CD. I got it to hear his playing. His playing is a delight to listen to. It is precise rather than fast or flashy. He was a troubled man but I do not receive his pain in his playing like for Hendrix - I just get great musicianship. Paul can play one note or play on one string and it sounds wonderful. 30 years ago, a friend who played guitar and who's musical tastes I respected, said to me that the best blues/rock guitarist ever he thought was Paul Kossoff. Other than for Kossoff, this album is not great. I do not like its songs, the lyrics, or the other group members' playing. ~Amazon

Kossoff's death in 1976 left us with but a handful of tracks featuring this tragic, gifted young musician. This CD contains many tracks from Free and Kossoff's session work. Some of his best and overlooked work is on studio sessions where he was free to simply play without the hassles of writing music himself. On these tracks, he truly shines with the heartfelt playing that defined his style.

Back Street Crawler, despite being Paul Kossoff's first post-Free album, contains contributions from all members of that band. "Molten Gold," the most accessible song on the album, features the talent of Free vocalist Paul Rodgers, and is an overlooked shoulda-been hit. Otherwise, the album is highlighted by Kossoff's blues- and rock-based guitar. "Time Away" is a haunting, atmospheric instrumental duet with avant folk-jazz guitarist/singer John Martyn that originally registered 18 minutes in length. The full version was eventually released on the Free box set Songs of Yesterday, but here is edited down significantly in favor of the 17-minute A-side track "Tuesday Morning," a more upbeat but less interesting choice. Regardless of this fault, this is one of those albums that deserves a place in the pantheon of classic rock.

This double CD contains the earliest known recordings of Paul Kossoff, whose tragic death in March 1976 robbed the rock world of one of its finest-ever blues guitarists. Taped at rehearsals with Black Cat Bones in London in 1967, the raw, lo-fi tracks find the teenager already a master of his instrument. Accompanied by musicians including Derek and Stuart Brooks (later to form the legendary Leaf Hound), and featuring a guest appearance from Paul Rodgers (soon to form Free with Kossoff), the recordings are of considerable historical importance. This set is an essential downloads for all serious rock fans.
