CBS/Sony Classical has been accompanying superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma for decades on his journey through the unsurpassed works written for his instrument by Johann Sebastian Bach. The label is now pleased to announce the release of important landmarks from that journey, Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach, on a single CD. Ma's first recording of Bach's six Solo Suites, which went on to win the Grammy® for "Best Classical Instrumental Performance" and is represented here by the Sarabande from the Sixth Suite, took place in 1982. In the same year, Yo-Yo Ma recorded Bach's complete sonatas for viola da gamba with harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper which was hailed by Gramophone as "intelligent and expressive."

Christopher Houlihan commences BWV542’s Fantasia with a delightful introductory flourish, and characterises the rippling fireworks and introspective interludes with strikingly different yet compelling timbral contrasts, topping things off with a brisk and fluent fugue. The Italian Concerto’s first two movements work surprisingly well on the organ in Houlihan’s arrangement. He transforms the implied pedal points in the harpsichord score into real ones, although Bach’s indicated distinctions between solo and tutti passages don’t consistently come across.

'This is a magnificent retrospective of Angela Hewitt’s achievement as a pianist in the keyboard works of J.S. Bach. As a project which was initiated a little before MusicWeb International’s classical pages took to the air but which has been covered extensively by numerous reviewers here over the years, the completion and bringing together of this remarkable set of recordings marks something of a milestone for everyone involved with classical music, as well as for Hyperion'

…Bach is the most indestructible of composers, and only die-hard 'original instrument' purists would reject the virtuoso, big-boned style of these performances. The virtuosity is apparent throughout, both of the soloist(s) and of course the orchestra. But it is virtuosity in the service of Bach, not virtuosity for its own sake. Tempi are direct and quick, but articulation remains clear, so that details are projected. The fine balancing of textures allows for details to be heard in fully scored passages too…
