Fux’s partita Les Combattans brings together within a single piece traditional dance movements and elements of the battaglia. In its opening movement the combatants are depicted by means of repeated notes and fugal passages, after which Les vainquers launches a sequence of dancelike episodes that are interrupted by an unusual movement in 3/2-time headed Perpetuum mobile. The perpetuum mobile fascinated the Baroque, countless scholars and inventors devising models intended to operate unceasingly of their own accord. This inevitably involved much trickery and deception since the very idea of a perpetuum mobile flies in the face of the principles of physics. Fux, too, must have heard about these machines and took the liberty of applying this concept to his partita, no doubt as a playful exercise.
