Peckinpah's intense and belligerently non-commercial work, (based on the book by Willi Heinrich), is a World War II tale told from the German perspective, following a platoon of German soldiers in the Russia of 1943, when the German Wehrmacht forces had been decimated and the Germans were retreating along the Russian front. James Coburn is Steiner, a German corporal and recipient of the Iron Cross who feels that he owes his loyalty to his family and fellow soldiers and not to Hitler and the German war machine. But when a new commander, Captain Stransky (Maximillian Schell), takes over the platoon, Steiner and Stransky come into immediate conflict.

This is one of several solid B-grade Westerns produced at the height of the genre's popularity in the '50s by the partnership of director Budd Boetticher, star Randolph Scott, and writer Burt Kennedy. Scott stars as Ben Brigade, a taciturn bounty hunter who captures wanted murderer Billy John (James Best) and heads for Santa Cruz, where a reward awaits Brigade and a rope most likely awaits the killer. There's more to Brigade than meets the eye, however; his actual quarry is Frank (Lee Van Cleef), his prisoner's brother and the man who killed Brigade's wife. At a trading post where Brigade and his prisoner have stopped, Indians attack. The bounty hunter saves the life of Mrs. Lane (Karen Steele), wife of the post's deceased manager. Lane decides to accompany her rescuer to Santa Cruz, so Brigade, counting on a showdown with Frank, hires outlaws Sam and Whit (Pernell Roberts and James Coburn) for protection on the duration of the journey. During the trip, Sam and Whit discuss betraying Brigade and turning in Billy John themselves for a reward and pardon.

With too much action to be lumped with "antiwar" films, and too little pro-war sentiment to satisfy the bloodthirsty, this highly individualistic treatment of a wartime situation by director Sam Peckinpah was initially given a cold shoulder by critics and is based on a novel by Willi Heinrich. The story concerns Steiner (James Coburn), an ordinary soldier in the German armies, fighting on the Russian front in 1943, who has won an Iron Cross for bravery. However, his main loyalty is to his fellow soldiers and his family - not Hitler, and certainly not the army, with its hierarchy of honors. Into his life appears a new company commander, Captain Stransky (Maximilian Schell), a true believer and army man, who would give almost anything for an Iron Cross. The captain's obstacle in obtaining this badge of honor is that he is an abject coward. Stransky's attempt to win Steiner to his side by promoting him to Sergeant is doomed to failure, and the conflict between them escalates from there.

A quote from Bertolt Brecht ends this bitter and angry war film by Sam Peckinpah: "Do not rejoice in his defeat, you men. For though the world has stood up and stopped the bastard, the bitch that bore him is in heat again." Peckinpah's intense and belligerently non-commercial work, (based on the book by Willi Heinrich), is a World War II tale told from the German perspective, following a platoon of German soldiers in the Russia of 1943, when the German Wehrmacht forces had been decimated and the Germans were retreating along the Russian front. But when a new commander, Captain Stransky (Maximillian Schell), takes over the platoon, Steiner and Stransky come into immediate conflict. Stransky is a career soldier, the complete opposite of Steiner, and a man who pledges himself heart and soul to Hitler and the war. But he envies Steiner for having been awarded an Iron Cross and deeply desires one himself.

Meet the seven gunmen who fought like seven hundred in John Sturge's classic Western retelling of Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai. This "iconic film" (Variety) features spectacular gun battles, Elmer Bernstein's Oscar®-nominated score and legendary cast including Academy Award® winners Yul Brenner (Best Actor, The King and I, 1956) and James Coburn (Best Supporting Actor, Affliction, 1997), together with Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson. Often imitated and spawning three sequels and a television series, the "enduring popular" (Leonard Maltin) cinematic achievement is "the very finest of the genre ever made" (Los Angeles Times).
