Books on information theory tend to fall into one of two extreme categories. There are large academic textbooks that cover the subject with great depth and rigor. Probably the best known of these is the book by Cover and Thomas.

Game Theory: A Critical Introduction (Repost)

Game Theory: A Critical Introduction
Publisher: Routledge | 1995-03-28 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 041509402X | PDF | 4,7 Mb

In recent years game theory has swept through all of the social sciences. Its practioners have great designs for it, claiming that it offers an opportunity to unify the social sciences and that it it the natural foundation of a rational theory of society. Game Theory is for those who are intrigued but baffled by these claims, and daunted by the technical demands of most introductions to the subject. Requiring no more than simple arithmetic, the book: * Traces the origins of Game Theory and its philosophical premises * Looks at its implications for the theory of bargaining and social contract theory * Gives a detailed exposition of all of the major `games' including the famous `prisoner's dilemma' * Analyses cooperative, non cooperative, repeated, evolutionary and experimental games.

Of the various books I have used for teaching syntax, this is the one that I prefer most. It is introductory in the sense that it requires little in terms of background or previous knowledge, but it is also advanced in the sense that it gradually builds up to a level of sophistication that is rarely achieved in introductory textbooks. The exercises are well integrated and challenging enough to trigger lively discussion and a high level of active participation from the students.
As an introductory textbook should be, this book is elegant and parsimonious, in particular, with SPR functioning dually as 'specifier' and 'subject', and GAP replacing SLASH with no LOCAL-NONLOCAL distinction. I've come to appreciate Syntactic Theory much more than previous works on HPSG. The book is well meant to be realistic and performance-plausible while espousing the competence model of phrase structure grammar.
