The Sicilian nobleman Sigismondo d'India was roughly contemporary with Monteverdi (both began their careers around 1600); the musical ferment of that period led, in d'India's case, to a very heady brew. His madrigals–duets, solos and five-voice works–are like inebriated Monteverdi: d'India set the Italian poetic texts (usually dealing with a lover's pain) with even less regard for academic counterpoint and even more surprising twists of harmony than did his more-famous colleague, yet the music never veers into the disorienting, seemingly willful weirdness of Gesualdo.

All India Radio Archival Release: Sarod (Vols. 1-9) is a nine volume series of compilation discs by sarod musician Ali Akbar Khan. These discs were sold individually but I have gathered all nine volumes here as one. They are taken from recordings performed on All India Radio primarily from the 1960's but also including one from 1956, most of which hadn't been heard outside of India until these compilations were assembled. Released in 1997, this series was released on compact disc in 2001.

Shaped by its richly diverse cultural heritage and by immensely significant historical events, the Indian subcontinent holds a unique place in world civilization. Perhaps no era is more relevant to our understanding of how present-day India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh came to be than the nearly two centuries of British rule, beginning in 1757, during which India emerged as the most valuable colony of any empire in history. This was a period of seminal transformation and change—for the subcontinent, for Britain, and for the world.

A stunning series celebrating the diversity and flavours of the Indian subcontinent travelling from the roof of the world in the north to the great rivers and deserts at its heart and the rainforests of the south. From the Valley of the Flowers nestled in West Himalaya and young turtles hatching on the east coast to India’sone-horned rhinos and the lions of the Gir forest, the sights and sounds of India are unique.
