Do you know what the common characteristic to all of the following: racing, sky diving and sky jumping? Yes? No? I will tell you, it’s all about speed and yes we are talking about Speed (fucking) Metal, the Thrash kind of real Speed that bands like VENOM and even DRAGONFORCE and I will not get into the debate regarding the difference between Thrash, Speed and Power Metal. SPEEDTRAP are what I would like to call old school Speed Metal, fast, furious, no holds bar, hand molting and head banging…

Evil Masquerade was founded 2003 in Copenhagen by Swedish guitarist Henrik Flyman (Lacrimosa, ex-Wuthering Heights, ex-Moahni Moahna, ex-ZooL). Together with drummer Dennis Buhl (ex-Hatesphere), bass player Kasper Gram and vocalist Henrik Brockmann (ex-Royal Hunt) they set off to record the band's debut album that was released early 2004 under the name Welcome to the Show. It almost immediately received worldwide recognition and made the charts in Japan at # 8. One year later it was followed up with their second album Theatrical Madness…

At first glance, Infected seems like a major departure for Swedish power metal kings Hammerfall. The cover doesn't feature their hooded, hammer-wielding mascot, but instead has a horror-movie vibe, with a gray hand reaching upward and the band's logo replaced by block capitals in blood red…

The Traveling Wilburys built upon George Harrison's comeback with Cloud Nine and helped revitalize the other supergroup members' careers, setting the stage for Bob Dylan's 1989 comeback with Oh Mercy, Tom Petty's first solo album, Full Moon Fever, produced by Jeff Lynne (sounding and feeling strikingly similar to this lark), and Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl, which was released posthumously. Given the success of this record and how it boosted the creativity of the rest of the five, it's somewhat a shock that the second effort falls a little flat. In retrospect, Vol. 3 plays a little bit better than it did at the time – it's the kind of thing to appreciate more in retrospect, since…

How many years has it been since 'Defying the Rules'? A mere four years separate that instantly classic album, and the sequel that might be one of the most anticipated sequels of the year. First things first, this is a good album, and its main influences include the fathers of metal themselves, Iron Maiden and Judas, specifically Painkiller, Priest…

2009's Tabula Rasa is the third album from Swedish melodic power metal band Bloodbound. The band made a splash with their debut (Nosferatu), which featured former Tad Morose frontman Urban Breed, but by their second album (2007's Book of the Dead) Breed and the band parted ways. While not a concept album per se, most songs tie in with the concept of tabula rasa, have some connection with a literal translation thereof, or have a lyrical foundation associated with literature mentioning tabula rasa. It will be especially interesting to fans of Urban Breed's previous work in Tad Morose.

"Book of the Dead" is the second album by metal band Bloodbound. It is the first with Pelle Åkerlind on drums, and the only one to feature the German vocalist Michael Bormann, who was under a one-time contract to record this album. While the singer is mostly known for his melodic rock/AOR works, his adaptability is very much in favor of the band and fronts this effort flawlessly delivering the appropriate heavy/power metal tone. Beyond vocals, the album features a totally devastating rhythm section that manages to sound interesting throughout the album while the guitars retain a fair balance between riffs and melodic lines, both in no short supply.

Formed by Swedish blood brothers Tomas Olsson on guitars and Fredrik Bergh on keys and bass, Bloodbound quickly became a complete band with the addition of talented drummer Oskar Belin and the unique vocalist Urban Breed, who recently departed Tad Morose after being with them for nearly a decade. The influences on this album are obvious. Iron Maiden is the primary influence on most of the songs with galloping bass lines and piercing/repeating lead guitar licks, but there are also many Blind Guardian moments with grand vocal choruses; but not to be ignored is the occasional Judas Priest vibe. Fans of Urban Breed's dominating vocal talents should not pass this one up.
