This double-disc anthology works well as a thematic companion to Postcards of the Hanging: The Grateful Dead Perform the Songs of Bob Dylan (2002). Similarly, Ladder to the Stars: Garcia Plays Dylan (2005) examines the unique relationship between the pair, featuring Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) in a variety of musical settings spanning nearly a quarter century. While the occasional exception exists, the contents are primarily presented in a chronological fashion.

Legend has it that a pizza delivery boy lifted Jerry Garcia's cassette tape of two evenings worth of very special music from his kitchen counter, thus paving its way into underground tape trading circles and giving a handle to these incredible performances. Now at last, from the vaults of Dawg Studios comes the sonically superb official release of this historic jam session, the only meeting of guitar greats Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, introduced to each other by their mutual friend and musical associate, mandolinist/ producer David Grisman. The Pizza Tapes capture these virtuosos at a rare moment in time, free of pressure, hassles or any given agenda other than making music and having plenty of fun.

Time has somewhat mellowed the general disdain that critics and Deadheads alike leveled at Go to Heaven upon its release in May of 1980. Granted, none of these readings come close to their perfunctory live counterparts. However, that argument holds true for a vast majority of the Dead's studio catalog – which had now grown to include 16 albums. Additionally, this disc marked the beginning of keyboardist Brent Mydland's tenure – who had joined the band in the spring of the previous year and would remain for a decade. All eight of the songs – not including "Antwerp's Placebo (The Plumber)," which is a 38-second instrumental percussion track – had either already worked their way into the Dead's live performance repertoire, or would in due time.
