Dismissed by rock critics but adored by its fans, Head East was the quintessential Midwestern arena rock outfit of the 1970s. Head East, for the most part, wasn't the most challenging band in the world; the St. Louis natives lacked the complexity of progressive rockers, and they weren't nearly as provocative and daring as punk, new wave, and heavy metal artists…

Judas Priest's first official live recording has always been met with equal amounts of acclaim and controversy: acclaim from those who consider it an excellent summation of the metal legend's 1970s output, and controversy from the critics and industry insiders who criticized what they believed to be a heavily overdubbed and studio-enhanced performance, mockingly naming it Unleashed in the Studio at times…

May 2014, three decades after the Jesus and Mary Chain first appeared on the scene in an explosion of noise, leather and attitude, it was announced that the Mary Chain, one of the most turbulent groups in pop history, would be performing their classic debut album Psychocandy live in its entirety for the first time to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary. By November 2014, the first Psychocandy shows were underway. They were both deafening and blinding, sound and light practically being used as weapons against the mesmerised crowd, and as the smoke unfurled and great tides of feedback rose and crashed everyone present surrendered to it all over again. This Deluxe package is a true collector’s item chronicling the bands homecoming gig at Glasgow’s legendary Barrowlands Ballroom, celebrating the tour that has propelled the band across the globe and back into the hearts and minds of faithful worldwide.

This March 1, 1972 show was filmed by Danmarks Radio, Denmark's national television and radio station. It was eventually released on video, which in turn led to some CD bootlegs of the audio portion of the concert. This double CD is not only legitimate but is an improvement on those bootlegs, as the sound was taken directly from the original video audio reel, and the discs are packaged with eight pages of detailed liner notes…

Live albums are hard. They’re rarely good, because they rarely deliver on what they aim to be: an encapsulation of an act’s live show experience. But they just can’t; a concert is more than just the songs played without multi-tracking and overdubs and with extra-long solos and appreciative crowd noise. A concert has a certain electricity in the air, certain smells (most of them illegal), and the sound is so much louder and fuller than any stereo or headphones can deliver. Plus, live albums are usually edited and tweaked or compiled from multiple shows, so what purports to be a live album or recreation of experience is not.

The first question one has to ask upon even gazing at the album sleeve of Paul Rodgers' Live in Glasgow in 2006 is, of course, has he still got it? That's like asking if Bob Dylan still has it, or Jimmy Page or Brian May or Ian Hunter. Hell yes he does! Recorded on the final night of a European tour, Rodgers and his bandmates, guitarists Howard Leese and Kurtis Dengler, bassist Lynn Sorensen and drummer Ryan Hoyle, lay down a tough, big sounding set of classics and more recent songs – including one new one – from his entire career and give them life, breath and fire again. We haven't heard live guitars sound like this in a long time, probably since the early '80s…

Symphonic metal. Ask any metal fan (or indeed fan of rock) to think of this genre, and then name a band that exemplifies it and you’ll be hard-pushed to find someone who doesn’t mention Nightwish. The Finnish group have been melding the aggression of metal to the glorious, sweeping majesty of the symphony for twenty years now and, despite some vocal changes over the past decade, have remained steadfast at the cutting-edge of the genre.
