Hans van Lier (born in Groningen, Netherlands 1961) is a versatile guitar player. His solo's are often lyrical, but he can also really storm. This always happens with great melodic sense. He masters various styles, and he is not afraid of rock 'n roll. Hans is self-taught as a guitar player. At the age of fourteen he began playing the electric guitar. He soon learnt a lot of chords. On a given day he discovered a nice 'run', which he soon began to use as a basis for his playing. It turned out that he discovered the blues scale on his own. In this same year he did his first gig in Appelscha. (Friesland, the Netherlands)

The island nation of Iceland is known for many things—majestic landscapes, volcanic eruptions, distinctive seafood—but racial diversity is not one of them. So the little-known story of Hans Jonathan, a free black man who lived and raised a family in early nineteenth-century Iceland, is improbable and compelling, the stuff of novels.

The name of Bernd Alois Zimmermann is probably not a very familiar one to the experimental classical music listener. As this top-notch disc shows, Zimmermann's music was (and still is) strikingly original. It begins with his Cello Concerto in the form of a pas de trois, from the mid 1960s, a five-movement work that exploits to the fullest the solo cello as well as the unusual accompanying orchestra, which includes alto saxophone, contrabass tuba, electric guitar, prepared piano, glass harp, and even cimbalom.

Liner Notes
Viewed collectively, Herbert Henck's recordings for ECM add up to a portrait gallery of some of the most fiercely independent spirits in 20th century music. In this series of recordings, Henck has illuminated composers whose work is outside all the "schools". After Mompou, Mosolov, Barraqué, and Hans Otte, the resourceful German pianist now turns his attention to two maverick Americans - George Antheil and Conlon Nancarrow.
