Label: Steven Chera Music | Tracks: 13 | Rls.date: 2016

Known for performing classics while adding his crooner touch, Steven Chera has captivated audiences nationwide for almost two decades. Chera’s newest album comprises all tracks performed by his inspirational icon, Frank Sinatra. Stamping his original twist, with the help of pianist and Music Director Bob Kaye (prominently affiliated with Buddy Rich and Dizzy Gillespie), The Classic Standards Volume 1 intermixes a collection of the Great American Songbook, classic standards from the early part of the 20th century.

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. It isn't fair to limit Jack Wilson to two sides. The range of players with whom the pianist has performed: from Sammy Davis and Eartha Kitt to Jackie McLean and Roland Kirk, makes clear he is multi-dimensional. All that range is not demonstrated on this set, but – despite its title – this is not simply a program of uptempo tracks followed by an equal number of ballads.

At the midpoint of her show with guitarist Diego Figueiredo on Sept. 27 at Cleveland's Nighttown, singer Cyrille Aimée pulled out her loop pedal and set about constructing the rhythmic and harmonic vocal tracks that would form the pulsing, multilayered foundation for a French-lyric song of her own composition. The wordless backing, with its beat-box bump and skip, had as much to do with hip-hop as jazz, as would much of the scatting on the other songs the duo performed this night—chestnuts such as "Old Devil Moon" and "Night In Tunisia," and Brazilian and French music standards, plus original compositions. Unlike the rollercoaster melodic flights of much scatting, Aimée often settled into blues-like repetition held within a limited tonal range—a rhythmic effect offset by stretched open vowels and, yes, snippets of more conventional…

Gene Bertoncini and Jack Wilkins share the spotlight on eight guitar duets in a program of eight dazzling standards, played on stage during a 1998 jazz cruise. The former's cool style meshes beautifully with the more aggressive hard bop approach of the latter, starting with their imaginative rendition of "Lover Man." The intense interplay of "Gone with the Wind" and the lyricism of "Here's That Rainy Day" are also among the many highlights of their performances together. There's only one solo feature, Wilkins' bittersweet and carefully crafted take of Rodgers & Hart's "Spring is Here." This highly recommended duo should be considered an essential acquisition for fans of jazz guitar.

A perfect place to begin for anyone wanting to explore Heather Dale's music. "The Road to Santiago" mostly departs from the predominantly Arthurian themes of previous Dale outings, exploring a range of folk-rock themes - from the opening 5/4 of Dale's piano and vocal on "Hero", it's clear this album will be full of new surprises. As ever, Heather Dale's remarkable, versatile voice - a beautiful instrument often compared to Loreena McKennitt, but for me often more akin to Mary Fahl of October Project - proves perfect for voicing her intuitive, moving, often witty lyrics. Overall, her songwriting on Road conveys a sense of people in place, accompanied by imaginative production and lyrics.
