Gurrumul Yunupingu is a world music phenomenon. A blind Aboriginal singer-songwriter from the remote Arnhem Land, he sings in the dialects of the Gumatj clan, uses simple acoustic backing and has sold more than 500,000 albums thanks to his yearning, soulful voice and sad-edged songs. His lyrics may deal with his homeland, nature and contemplation, but his gently epic melodies have echoes of western folk, gospel, soul and reggae. His second album follows the same approach as the first, but was recorded in New York with Gurrumul now playing not just acoustic guitar, but piano and drums.
