The greatest variety acts of the past – humorists, bands, vaudevillians, dramatists, dancers and more – return for a second collection of the earliest of the venerable Vitaphone sound shorts. Entertainers from coast to coast, from stage and screen, from the heights of Brooklyn to the valleys of Hollywood, all shared the spotlight as cinema learned to play with sound. Nestled in among 35 Jazz Age gems to be found on this 2-Disc collection are appearances by Edgar Bergen, Fred Allen, Fred Waring, Blanche Sweet, Bert Lahr, Pat O’Brien, Joe E. Brown and a (very) young Natalie Schafer – the future Mrs. Thurston Howell III on Gilligan’s Island.

A massive six-hour biopic of Napoleon, tracing his career from his schooldays (where a snowball fight is staged like a military campaign), his flight from Corsica, through the French Revolution (where a real storm is intercut with a political storm) and the Terror, culminating in his triumphant invasion of Italy in 1797 (the film stops there because it was intended to be part one of six, but director Abel Gance never raised the money to make the other five). The film's legendary reputation is due to the astonishing range of techniques that Gance uses to tell his story, culminating in the final twenty-minute triptych sequence, which alternates widescreen panoramas with complex multiple- image montages projected simultaneously on three screens.

Gabrielle (Helene Hallier), an ambitious but innocent would-be young chorine, trumps a music hall publicity stunt to become the new Parisian nightclub Cinderella. But this lighter-than-champagne-bubbles story is only a pretext for LA REVUE DES REVUES's white-hot, non-stop procession of outrageously and scantily attired exotic dancers, showgirls, and acrobats including the Tiller¹s Follies Girls, Ruth Zackey and the Hoffmann Girls, and danseuse russe Lila Nikolska. But it's Josephine Baker, "the high priestess of primitivism" (J. Hoberman Village Voice), who triumphs in two show stopping numbers in which "her clownish backfield-in-motion Charleston shimmy is unlike anything else in the movie and perhaps unlike anything anyone ever did."

Eddie, a conscientious if blundering mail carrier, is in love with Madge, a waitress, who is equally admired by Officer Flannigan and Harrigan, a fireman. The persistent efforts of Harold Jones, a promoter, to win Madge as his secretary unite the three rivals against Jones. They toss a coin to determine who will escort Madge to the postal ball, and Eddie wins; meanwhile, two detectives, undergoing tests to qualify them as postal inspectors, concentrate on Eddie. Madge accepts Jones's offer when the cafe owner tries to force his attentions on her. At the ball, Eddie, who does not dance, leaves Madge to his rivals, but during a black bottom contest, a piece of ice falls into his collar; and his wild gyrations win him the prize cup. Eddie is disillusioned to learn that Madge is engaged to Jones, but in delivering a package to the Jones home, he discovers that Jones is a swindler and with the aid of the detectives rushes to save Madge.

One of the rare American films directed by Danish auteur Benjamin Christensen, Mockery stars Lon Chaney Sr. as a half-witted Russian peasant. On the verge of starvation, Chaney is hired to guide a beautiful countess (Barbara Bedford) through the treacherous Siberian wastes. Once he arrives at the countess' home territory, Chaney is swept up by the Bolshevik movement. He comes to despise the aristocracy in general and the countess in particular, but the young woman's kindness towards him weakens his revolutionary resolve. Long thought lost, Mockery was rediscovered and preserved in the mid-1970s; the film was based on a story by Stig Esbern.

A crazy slapstick comedy about the factory owner Mr Pardon and his uncle Mr Monday who swap their identities and invent incredible stories to escape marriage and be with their beloveds. Starring one of Alfred Hitchock's muses Anny Ondra and the King of Czech Comedians, Vlasta Burian, this silent movie excels for its original slapstick, especially the lange of invented murders, chases, and doppelgenger scenes. The movie has been out of circulation for decades, with the last screenings of the original combustible copy held at Prague's Ponrepo theater (affiliated to the National Film Archive) in the 1960s. This reconstructed version of the film is accompanied by a specially composed score by Czech trio Neuveritelno.
