In January of 1208, a papal legate was murdered on the banks of the Rhone in southern France. A furious Pope Innocent III accused heretics of the crime and called upon all Christians to exterminate heresy between the Garonne and Rhone rivers–a vast region now known as Languedoc–in a great crusade. This most holy war, the first in which Christians were promised salvation for killing other Christians, lasted twenty bloody years–it was a long savage battle for the soul of Christendom.

Sir Steven Runciman's three volume A History of the Crusades, one of the great classics of English historical writing, is being reissued. This volume deals completely with the First Crusade and the foundation of the kingdom of Jerusalem. As Runciman says in his preface: 'Whether we regard the Crusades as the most tremendous and most romantic of Christian adventures, or as the last of the barbarian invasions, they form a central fact in medieval history. Before their inception the centre of our civilization was placed in Byzantium and in the lands of the Arab caliphate. Before they faded out the hegemony in civilization had passed to western Europe. Out of this transference modern history was born.

The final album of an (unintentional) trilogy, Crusade is most notable for the appearance of a very young, pre- Rolling Stones Mick Taylor on lead guitar. Taylor's performance is indeed the highlight, just as Eric Clapton and Peter Green's playing was on the previous album. The centrepiece of the album is a beautiful instrumental by Taylor titled "Snowy Wood," which, while wholly original, seems to combine both Green and Clapton's influence with great style and sensibility. The rest of the record, while very enjoyable, is standard blues rock fare of the day, but somewhat behind the then-progressive flavour of the period 1967. Mayall, while being one of the great bandleaders of London, simply wasn't really the frontman that the group needed so desperately, especially then. Nevertheless, Crusade is important listening for Mick Taylor aficionados. –Matthew Greenwald, All Music Guide

Chan's exhaustive research, using new material made available in the post-Mao era as well as archives from the 1950s and 1960s, has yielded novel insights into Mao, central decision-making, and policy implementation in the communist hierarchy.
