The Grateful Dead made their reputation on the road with their live shows, and they always struggled to capture that magic in the studio. From the Mars Hotel, while not a classic, represents one of their better studio albums…

Who's ready for a little early 80's Grateful Dead? For our last installment of the 2016 Dave's Picks series we are heeding that call with Boulder, CO, December 9, 1981. The last show of a 10-day run, Dave's Picks Volume 20 finds the band cranking out back-to-back high-energy sets; the first filled with superior Jerry moments (“Friend Of The Devil,” “Bird Song”) and a very rare 1-2 punch of Bobby songs ("Cassidy," "Looks Like Rain"). The second is a powerhouse of tight innovation with a nearly perfect "Scarlet>Fire," Brent's organs taking "Estimated" to an otherworldly level, and a double encore fit for "rock 'n' roll excellence."

The Grateful Dead Movie, released in 1977 and directed by Jerry Garcia, is a film that captures live performances from the Grateful Dead's October 1974 five-night stand at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. This end-of-tour run marked the beginning of an extended hiatus for the band, with no shows planned for 1975…

The Grateful Dead's second live release was an eponymously titled double LP whose cover bears the striking skull-and-roses visual motif that would become instantly recognizable and an indelibly linked trademark of the band. As opposed to their debut concert recording, Live/Dead (1969), this hour and ten minutes concentrates on newer material, which consisted of shorter self-contained originals and covers. Coming off of the quantum-leap success of the studio country-rock efforts Workingman's Dead (1969) and American Beauty, Grateful Dead offers up a pair of new Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter compositions – "Bertha" and "Wharf Rat" – both of which garnered a permanent place…

The Grateful Dead's eponymously titled debut long-player was issued in mid-March of 1967. This gave rise to one immediate impediment – the difficulty in attempting to encapsulate/recreate the Dead's often improvised musical magic onto a single LP. Unfortunately, the sterile environs of the recording studio disregards the subtle and often not-so-subtle ebbs and zeniths that are so evident within a live experience. So, while this studio recording ultimately fails in accurately exhibiting the Grateful Dead's tremendous range, it's a valiant attempt to corral the group's hydra-headed psychedelic jug-band music on vinyl…

When it was announced in early 2015 that the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary celebration would include a handful of reunion gigs – their first live appearances since the 1995 death of founder Jerry Garcia – the news was met with a cautious optimism. In the two decades since officially disbanding, numerous iterations have toured the band's catalog (the Dead, the Other Ones, etc.) featuring surviving members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart, collectively considered the "core four." Until 2015, though, the Grateful Dead brand had not been revived and, for some fans, the thought of playing a proper Dead show without Garcia still seemed sacrilegious.
