In this fresh and revealing film the self-proclaimed living sculptures Gilbert & George join Tim Marlow in a walk around their "Major Exhibition" at Tate Modern. They discuss humanity, sex, death, race and religion; their love of the city and their dislike of the countryside. They explain how they go about creating their art, their iconic dress sense and their tricky relationships with the art establishment and the media. Gilbert & George have always pushed at the boundaries of art and society. Their pictures are provocative, disturbing and profoundly moving. Their art confronts life in the vibrant, seductive, tense London metropolis.

Tim Marlow discusses art, religion, and the environment with Gilbert Proesch and George Passmore (known collectively as Gilbert & George). The pair made a name for themselves in the early 1970s as performance artists (they adopted the term ‘living sculptures’, insisting that everything they do in their everyday lives is art), but were later known for their large scale photo-montages which often contained shocking and controversial images. In this fascinating documentary–shot at the Tate Modern–they reveal how it feels to be ostracized by the art community and the media, as they continue to push the boundaries of art, society, good taste, and decency.

Jazz / Post Bop / Piano / Saxophone

Following the success of their earlier collaboration, Mal Waldron and George Haslam continue with a sly collection of standards and originals. As before, there is a remarkable telepathy between the players, which translates to some delightful interaction between these two masters. Haslam must be one of the most underrated players on saxophone. Here, he shows a strong command of both the baritone and soprano saxophones, as well as the taragato, which he blows on "From Charleston 'til Now."

Singer Mel Tormé and pianist George Shearing make a perfect team, bringing out the best in each other. With the assistance of bassist John Leitham and drummer Donny Osborne, the swinging, witty duo performs a variety of standards, including Noël Coward's "Someday I'll Find You", "The Way You Look Tonight", and "Anyone Can Whistle", and a couple of medleys highlighted by a humorous six-song "New York, New York Medley". All of the Tormé/Shearing collaborations are quite enjoyable and highly recommended as some of their best work of the 1980s.
