Hard Rock, Hair Metal

Despite having released a debut album at the tail-end of the ’80s that has since become a bit of a cult favourite amongst more than a few aficionados of melodically tinged hard rock, for MARCHELLO – the band of guitarist & vocalist Gene Marchello – things turned out with their 2nd disc. The 14 songs in “The Magic Comes Alive” deliver some killer rockin’ tunes ranging from elaborated Melodic Hard Rock to straight American Hair Metal. This album is brilliant and a must.

Marchello released "Destiny" (CBS, 1989) at the decade's end, and it arguably featured the last great Metal album cover; a painting/collage of a half rock-slut/half demon standing on a pedestal in a postmodern post-apocalypse landscape. The album was light if you think of it as Metal, but if you consider it as a morphed Rats record it's heavy on guitar wizardry. Though some Ratty absurdity survived ("Heavy Weight Champion of Love", "Rock N' Roll Rumble") for the most part this is played straight, delivering a solid slab of rock for the kids. "First Love" was the MTV video (and a grass roots hit), and the band got to open for Ozzy, Extreme and others during their run. Similar artists: Blue Murder, TNT, Baton Rouge…

1989's Destiny was the debut album from American melodic hard rock band Marchello. Led by guitarist/vocalist Gene Marchello, the band had a great melodic rock sound with plenty of hard rock punch and an almost European polish.

While countless rockers started their careers in the New York suburb of Long Island before going on to worldwide success (Billy Joel, Twisted Sister, Steve Vai, Brian Setzer, Blue Öyster Cult, etc.), there have been countless acts that appeared poised for a breakthrough, but for whatever reason, fell short. Many longtime followers of Long Island-based rock would probably agree that tops on the "woulda/coulda/shoulda" list were the Good Rats, a group who played at some of the East Coast's best-known/biggest venues (Madison Square Garden, Nassau Coliseum, the Philadelphia Spectrum) during the '70s, while opening for such big names as Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, the Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Journey, Heart, Styx, Meat Loaf, and Rush, among others…

The owner of a studio and nightclub in late-'60s Buffalo, William Nunn christened his Mo Do label with the single You Gave Me Love by his son Bobby and friend Eugene. But Bob & Gene's LP never came out 'til now; their first single joins Your Name; You Don't Need Me ; the title song, and more raw, sweet-and ultra-rare-soul!

The name Young Guns seems ironically amiss until one learns that this recording dates from 1968-69 when organist Gene Ludwig was thirty years old, guitarist Pat Martino twenty-three and drummer Randy Gelispie somewhere in that neighborhood, long before he became fondly known as "Uncle G." The organ trio was in its heyday then, and this one was caught on tape during an exciting live date at Club 118 in Louisville, KY. How many other such performances have been lost forever owing to the absence of a tape recorder or the failure to turn it on is anyone's guess. But this one, thank goodness, has been preserved for present-day ears to appreciate.

The sounds of legendary pianist Gene Harris and his British quartet are released for the very first time with Live in London. Drawn from recordings in the Harris archive that were made in 1966, these are true blues-soul-jazz gems which reveal Harris at his best in standards such as My Funny Valentine and Blue Monk.
