Duets & Rarities: The Gold Collection is a two-disc set collecting 40 duets and rarities (natch) featuring Frank Sinatra. Most date from the '40s, his Columbia years, and most can be found on the gargantuan 12-disc set The Columbia Years (1943-1952): The Complete Recordings. The first disc features a few intriguing duets ("New York, New York" with Gene Kelly, "A Little Learning Is a Dangerous Thing" with Pearl Bailey, "Me and My Shadow" with Sammy Davis, Jr., even the oddball "Mama Will Bark" with Dagmar), some ostensibly grabbed from radio shows. The quality is sub-standard, though, and, despite the presence of a few novelties, none but the most rabid Sinatra collectors need bother with it.

THIS ALBUM EXPLORES HUMAN EMOTION. I've always been fascinated by the range of emotion people experience, as well as the mind-body connection. The themes of this album include the journey from darkness into light and the multitude of emotional struggles that we deal with everyday. Musically, this album explores the world of Jazz and Beyond; from acoustic jazz and cinematic compositions driven by mood and sound effects mixed with improvisation to a genre-bending sound with contemporary production, groove, and songwriting.

Frank Sinatra was arguably the most important popular music figure of the 20th century, his only real rivals for the title being Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles. In a professional career that lasted 60 years, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain his appeal and pursue his musical goals despite often countervailing trends. He came to the fore during the swing era of the 1930s and '40s, helped to define the "sing era" of the '40s and '50s, and continued to attract listeners during the rock era that began in the mid-'50s. He scored his first number one hit in 1940 and was still making million-selling recordings in 1994. This popularity was a mark of his success at singing and promoting the American popular song as it was written, particularly in the 1920s, '30s, and '40s…

Guitarist, composer, and recording artist Geordie Kelly began playing guitar at age 12, and by age 15 he was playing in local rock bands. He was exposed to great music early in life because he grew up in a musically rich household hearing all the great soul and R&B artists such as Ray Charles in his father's record collection and everything from Bach to Dylan in his mother's record collection. He is a graduate of both East Carolina University (BM) and the University of Kentucky (MA) music programs where he pursued guitar and jazz studies to the fullest. His studies at UK culminated in a five-chapter thesis entitled Joe Pass…

Altoist Frank Strozier's first session as a leader has been reissued on this Vee Jay CD with the original six selections joined by five additional and previously unreleased performances, only one of which is actually an alternate take. The altoist's quintet consists of Miles Davis' rhythm section of the time (pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb), along with the late, great trumpeter Booker Little. The music, mostly comprised of Strozier originals, is advanced hard bop, and the music is both enjoyable and (due to Little's presence) somewhat historic.
