In 1962, Ferri started singing professionally in nightclubs in Milan, Italy. In Rome, she built a considerable local following and gained national attention with a hit recording of ‘Sempre’. She concentrated her repertoire on Roman songs, although there were always songs from other parts of Italy as well as some from America.

Flavio Ferri-Benedetti has a very pleasant voice (not a `spectacular voice', but an interpretive ability and range that suits these cantatas beautifully, to a `T'). From the first bar of music, the first sung phrase in Scarlatti's Ombre tacite e sole, you'll hear control and clarity of sound. Though comparisons are always subjective and limited, his voice is more reminiscent of singers like Andreas Scholl (one of his earlier singing teachers) and contemporaries such as Brian Asawa, Iestyn Davies, Randall Wong, Valer Barna-Sabadus, rather than the vocal ranges of David Hansen or the compellingly rich mezzo sounds of Cencic or Fagioli.

Little is known about the life of Domenico Zanatta (c1665-1748). He was most probably born in Venice, as the title pages of his manuscripts seem to attest, printing his first collection of sonatas at the tender age of 24. However, he also had a second endeavour and a great mastery of the cantata genre where his melodic inventiveness freely flows, continuing the tradition of his Venetian colleagues in a worthy way. Flavio Ferri-Benedetti and Musica Fiorita, under Daniela Dolci, present some of his pieces interspersed with works by Cavalli, Strozzi, who was a pupil of Cavalli, and Fontana: a pioneer of the, then new, stile recitativo.

Written almost two centuries ago by Saverio Mercadante, coveted by many theatres of the day, Francesca da Rimini was, in fact, never staged. Every time it was scheduled for performance, something happened and it got canceled. A long series of incidents prevented it from reaching the stage for as many as 185 years. Its forgotten manuscript, which was only known for its ill-starred fate, suddenly re-emerged five years ago in Madrid, teh city where it was to have been premiered in 1831. The soprano Leonor Bonilla is quite impressive in the part of the protagonist: she portrays the character's psychological frailty as well as her determination wtih a steely vocal technique, spinning out incredible modulations, displaying strong and dazzling vocalizations, easily soaring into the high register and flaunting such an attractive, casual and poignant stage presence that she even dares moving some dance steps with the corps de ballet. Aya Wakizono is an admirable Paolo: endowed with a superb mezzo voice, she seeks and achieves consistency throughout the range, is virtuosic in the coloratura, and fluent. No less demanding is the part of the tenor Lanciotto, with its fearful leaps and ornamentation worth of the Neapolitan Rossini: Mert Sungu might in time get rid of a touch of harshness here and there, but already now he can tackle all the difficulties of the part with a timbric quality and an expressively worth of note…

It is a story made for the stage: Francesca da Rimini is a deceived woman-in-love who disregards her arranged marriage, decides that she has the perfect right to true love, and ends up murdered. Dante originally wrote a few verses on this subject, but some decades later Boccaccio expanded the sketch into a tale containing all the ingredients of a genuine tragedy. In 1901 Gabriele D'Annunzio drew on this material to pen a scandalous fin de siecle drama.

Flavio Ferri-Benedetti, one of today s key countertenors for Italian baroque, pays homage to the once-admired but often underestimated castrato Domenico Annibali, who was greatly appreciated in a time when Senesino, Farinelli, Caffarelli or Carestini were fighting for supremacy on Europe s stages. His 25-year career had him traveling between Italy, England, Germany and Poland, singing for composers such as Handel, Porpora, Zelenka but, most importantly, for Hasse, with whom he premiered most of his operatic roles together with the great prima donna Faustina Bordoni. In this exciting and varied recital, half of the programme is brand new to disc, including some rare gems such as Feo s 'Andromaca', Latilla s 'Romolo' or Porpora s 'Filandro'.

Roland Petit’s “Fledermaus à la française”, “La Chauve-souris”, was originally created for the Ballet National de Marseille in 1979 with Petit’s wife Zizi Jeanmaire partnered by Denis Ganio and Luigi Bonino as the mastermind of the nocturnal escapades. The action was transferred from the operetta’s Vienna to the Paris of Vaudeville theatres, which was the original source of Johann Strauss’s celebrated operetta. Directed by Luigi Bonino, Petit’s assistant of many years, who also dances the role of Ulrich, it features two more dancing stars from the “Petit school” in the principal roles: Massimo Murru, the male star dancer of La Scala’s company, for whom Petit had written several ballets and Alessandra Ferri, who counts among the finest ballerinas of today. Awarded with the coveted title of “Prima Ballerina Assoluta” at La Scala, she was once described by Roland Petit as the only rightful successor to legendary Zizi Jeanmaire.

Sarah Ferri is back, and how! After its successful debut in 2012 and more than 100 concerts at home and abroad was silent, but appearances are deceiving. Sarah worked quietly to the successor of Ferri Tales, and the result can be seen. On 23 September displeasure appears an absolute killer album. Displeasure contrasts with the sunny swing jazz from the first album. The inspiration came from dark, melancholy corner, which Sarah was using her voice low register. The songs are set against a cinematic backdrop. Using a midi keyboard pads and garage band, she composed sumptuous orchestration with strings, timpani and choirs. So she took her influences by Ennio Morricone, Louis Bacalov, George Gershwin, Ray Ellis and James Newton Howard. The songs themselves are a fusion of piano, pop, R & B and soul jazz of the years 60-70. Moreover, there is also flirting with subtle electronics and 80 beats.
