Erik Söderlind is a young man in no particular hurry. Not yet 30, he plays jazz guitar with supreme assurance, and on his debut album Twist For Jimmy Smith, he has put together a lovely, leisurely paced, always swinging collection of standards and originals that deserves worldwide recognition. Of course, he's unlikely to get it. We live in a world obsessed with image, a world that all too often mistakes image for the real thing. Should Sweden's Söderlind be passed over, it's the world's loss. Here he teams up with two other extremely talented local musicians, organist Kjell Öhman and reed man Magnus Lindgren to make an album that brooks repeated listening. Söderlind plays in a line stemming from Charlie Christian and continuing through Wes Montgomery and George Benson—and that's George Benson when John Hammond billed him "The Most Exciting New Guitarist On The Jazz Scene Today." Before someone discovered he could sing, dressed him in glittery suits and stuck him on the cabaret circuit. Twist For Jimmy Smith provides a glimpse of what jazz was all about in those far off days; though this album is not about nostalgia. It's about the real thing, what Söderlind, on the sleeve calls "the joy of making music" and communicating that joy.

Carson Cooman is many things musical organist and Composer in Residence at the Memorial Church, Harvard University; writer, critic and consultant, concert organist, and above all a highly prolific composer of music in a wide variety of genres, from orchestral to song. His organ compositions come in many styles, from liturgical models, to more gritty and substantial pieces such as his organ symphonies and preludes and fugues. The music in this programme, all composed in 2016 and 2017, is varied and consists of concert pieces (though suitable for church use) as opposed to explicitly liturgical works.

Frontiers is a musical travelogue through lands unknown although the sonic climate is very much influenced by the two musicians shared Northern European heritage. The album is book-ended by Vista & Ascension which feature Wøllo's panoramic chordal backdrops over which Boddy plays his now famous "Ondes Martenot" glissando synth lead lines. Between these two beautiful, haunting tracks the album is built around four sequencer driven pieces, each gaining in intensity and culminating in the intense penultimate title track Frontiers. These are interspersed with more abstract and atmospheric interludes, featuring field recordings the two artists have made in their own personal travels through their respective native landscapes…

Ian Boddy & Erik Wøllo first worked together on the Frontiers album released in 2012 as a limited edition CD. This musical travelogue through imaginary northern landscapes garnered high praise for it’s shifting moods and panoramic soundscapes. The duo were invited to play their inaugural concert at the Electronic Circus Festival V held in Guetersloh, Germany in the autumn of 2012. The organisers requested that Boddy & Wøllo performed as much of the Frontiers album as possible and indeed tracks 4 to 12 are taken from that release albeit interpreted for a live concert setting. A further 30 minutes of all new material was also composed and this comprises the opening 3 tracks of the concert…
Concertegbouw Orchestra, Sir John Barbirolli - Barbirolli conducts Erik Satie, Benjamin Britten, Antonin Dvorak (2003)

Erik Satie: Gymnopédies Nos. 1 & 3; Benjamin Britten: Sinfonia da Requiem
Antonín Dvořák: Symphony #7 in D minor, Op. 70 (2003)
Concertegbouw Orchestra, Amsterdam; conducted by Sir John Barbirolli

This is a fine Testament release taken from the archives of Netherlands Radio and enshrines some magnificent Barbirolli performances in somewhat opaque sound. The Satie Gymnopedie's have a delicate and loving sound that reveal Sir John's deep and intrinsic love for the miniaturistic charm of these enchanting pieces. Britten's 'Sinfonia da Requiem' was another Barbirolli speciality and this is one of many recordings available. However it is intriguing to observe the special attention and alertness that the Concertgebouw players impart to the music that takes on an added grandeur. However it is the Dvořák Seventh that is the real highlight of the disc as it is a version to die for! Sir John handles the music with real imagery and heart-on-sleeve emotion that almost rivals Kertész and Sejna, my other preferred versions in this landmark work.

During the moving final scene of his film Modern Times (1936), Charlie Chaplin (18891977) shows a picture of a man and a woman. She is crying. He moves his finger to the corner of his mouth, draws a smile, and conjures up a smile on her face. In the end they walk away, hand in hand, on their journey to the horizon and to an unknown future. During this final image, a melody that later was given the title Smile is being played. As with many of his films, Chaplin composed the music himself. Smile acts as the finale for the collection of works on this CD, which have at their centre a song cycle by the Belgian composer Godfried Devreese (18931962), written during the horrors of the First World War.

Echotides is highly engaging and meditative with a delicate and finely structured symbiosis between the slow motion atmospheres, sparse melodic lines and detailed rhythms (accentuated by the contributions from percussionist Kouame Sereba on two tracks.) Echotides is deeply expansive and contemplative electronic music. These sonic identities reflect the ever-changing alternatives in nature and our environments. It’s music that is rich in depth and colors with echoes of memories and imaginary places, epic dimensions and a minimalist’s restrained elegance.

This electronic/ambient release is Erik Wollo’s 2015 live performance at the late-night Star’s End radio show on WXPN in Philadelphia. This is a long-form, introspective 60-minute piece with thirteen sections of enigmatic textural components organically flowing into each other. Eschewing the melody and harmony found in Wøllo’s studio work, Star’s End 2015 is an intricate expression of ambience and this artist’s potent skills at creating space and ever-expanding sound-universes…
