Psychedelic Rock, Soul, Funk

The debut effort by Eric Burdon and War was an erratic effort that hinted at more potential than it actually delivered. Three of the five tunes are meandering blues-jazz-psychedelic jams, two of which, "Tobacco Road" and "Blues for Memphis Slim," chug along for nearly 15 minutes…

Eric Burdon began his long and successful career on and off with The Animals, as lead singer. He then created Eric Burden and War, partnered with Jimmy Witherspoon for an album, had a solo career and then proceeded with a few Animals reunions in between. Over the years Burdon has become an accomplished writer, singer, artist and actor, developing his unending artistic abilities, always doing what he wants - successfully.
His newest release, Absolutely The Best, showcases some of the best songs he has released during his career, with a little musical freshening. From the signature song, "House of the Rising Sun" to other classics such as "We've Gotta Get Outta This Place" and "Spill The Wine", Burden once again proves his timelessness.

It can't be considered a comeback because he's never really been away and 2004's My Secret Life – recorded with the same basic band and producer – already proved there was plenty of gas left in Eric Burdon's seemingly bottomless tank. But Soul of a Man finds the ex-Animals lead singer in fine, even feisty form. Credit should be shared by producer/drummer Tony Braunagel and a backing band of veterans, led by guitarist Johnny Lee Schell and organist Mike Finnigan, who find the perfect tone to support Burdon's growling vocals.

"Love is all around" portraits like any other work, the quintessential of the powers of this band gathered with the blackest voice of a white man ever existed. As a matter of fact, Eric Burdon gives a true tour de force performance in his album. Tobacco road is a big event. Hovered by a wilder environment respect Edgar Winter's version, the overall result ignites the stage with sparkling splendor. But to my view, the central track, the primeval scream, the main event is the most explosive, vibrant and electrifying version you and me had listened about Paint in black previously. This version literally lefts behind any other version because its state of wild roughness and visceral energy. If you really pay attention to the code of the piece, you will find such doses of mesmerizing conveyance that it will be hard for anyone of us to forget.

…A revolutionary group born during tumultuos time, Eric Burdon and WAR fought the good fight while they were together. Like the song says, they can't take away the music - it remains alive, and still blazing.

"During their brief (1969-71) time together, Eric Burdon and WAR rode a wave of musical energy that soared and, ultimately, crashed. The sheer volatility of this collaboration was part of its power - the pairing of a veteran British blues-rock singer with a Danish harmonica player and six Afro-American R&B/jazz players was an unlikely one from the start. Burdon and his bandmates declared "WAR" when "peace" was the popular cry - and then spread a message of love with ecstatic abandon…
