Sitting atop the charts in 1975, Elton John and Bernie Taupin recalled their rise to power in Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, their first explicitly conceptual effort since Tumbleweed Connection. It's no coincidence that it's their best album since then, showcasing each at the peak of his power, as John crafts supple, elastic, versatile pop and Taupin's inscrutable wordplay is evocative, even moving…

Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is the ninth studio album by British singer/musician Elton John. It debuted at number 1 on the U.S. Pop Albums chart, the first album ever to do so, and stayed there for seven weeks. It was certified gold in May 1975 and was certified platinum and 3x platinum in March 1993 by the RIAA. In Canada, it also debuted at number 1 on the RPM national Top Albums chart and only broke a run of what would have been fifteen consecutive weeks at the top by falling one position to number 2 in the ninth week. On the UK Albums Chart, it peaked at # 2. In 2003, the album was ranked number 158 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This was the last album until Too Low For Zero that Elton John and his classic band would play together.

The first album ever to enter the US pop charts at number one, Captain Fantastic – an unabashedly autobiographical concept album – rarely receives due credit as John’s finest work by a distance. The last for many years to feature his heyday band line-up, it sees Bernie Taupin’s lyrics rattling through memories of his and John’s "years of struggle" as a frustrated songwriting duo before gargantuan success arrived. Any act essaying such indulgence would be laughed out of town nowadays: in May 1975, an era of glam peacocks and spectacular showboating, it made sense. While scarce on hits, it features, in Someone Saved My Life Tonight, the singer’s greatest moment. Both John and producer Gus Dudgeon have hailed this as the best Elton album. (BBC)

Elton John has always liked having it both ways. He's flamboyant and vain, yet empathetic and sincere. He sits at his piano playing sentimental melodies, but the words come not from inside his soul but from friend Bernie Taupin. For Captain Fantastic, he and Taupin wrote a concept album which sketches their career together. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is easily the strongest song outside of the concept. The addition of several songs "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" featuring John Lennon, "Philadelphia Freedom," and "One Day at a Time" blow the concept but up the entertainment value considerably. ~ Rob O'Connor

Rock of the Westies is the tenth studio album by British singer-songwriter Elton John. Like Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Rock of the Westies also debuted on the US Billboard 200 chart at #1, the only two albums at that time to have done so. It was less successful in the artist's home territory of the UK, where it reached #5 on the UK Albums Chart. Robert Christgau listed it as #7 on his list of the best albums of 1975.

Less than four months after issuing the landmark and autobiographical Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975), Elton John re-emerged with a new band and a slightly modified sound. However, the departure of Dee Murray (bass) and Nigel Olsson (drums) would ultimately begin a deceleration in terms of John's success, which rivalled only the Beatles' and Elvis Presley's in terms of global acclaim…

Ever since 2001's Songs from the West Coast, Elton John and his longtime collaborator, Bernie Taupin, have been deliberately and unapologetically chasing their glory days of the early '70s, but nowhere have they been as candid in evoking those memories as they are on 2006's The Captain & the Kid, the explicitly stated sequel to 1975's masterpiece Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy…
