Multi-Grammy Award nominee, Brazilian pianist/singer/composer/arranger Eliane Elias is known for her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style which blends her Brazilian roots, her sensuous, alluring voice with her impressive compositional and piano skills. All her recordings went top five on Billboard and top five on the radio charts in the U.S., with many reaching number one. In Japan, four of Eliane’s recordings received the Gold Disc Award from Swing Journal, (including consecutively her last three releases). Her 2007 release, Something for You, received the Best Vocal Album of the Year Award in Japan. In 2008, Eliane was the number two artist in CD sales in France on the Annual Jazz Charts.
This is a great collaboration of two master musicians for a remarkable Brazilian Jazz album; Eliane Elias and Randy Brecker (married at the time), with an album in dedication to their daughter Amanda. This album is listed as Randy Brecker and Eliane Elias; even though, it should've been Eliane Elias and Randy Brecker since Eliane's presence, performance and arrangements are more prominent than Randy's, but that was just a marketing strategy since Eliane was just being introduced to the North American audience. Anyway, that doesn't deminish the artistry here.
Eliane Elias' second record for Bluebird is, like the previous Kissed by Nature, a vocal date intended for crossover audiences. Elias connects with her Brazilian pop heritage by choosing to sing, early on, a pair of Astrud Gilberto pieces, "Call Me" and "So Nice (Summer Samba)," both of which fortuitously suit the short range of her voice. Still, she speaks far more with a half-minute of piano soloing than she does with several minutes of vocal interpretation, and sounds far more comfortable taking an extra verse of the latter in Portuguese.
Backing Elias on Light My Fire is a crew of twelve high-caliber players, including special guests guitarist/vocalist Gilberto Gil and trumpeter Randy Brecker. The rhythm section - which has accompanied Elias on several of her most recent recordings - includes guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Paulo Braga. Also on hand to sing with Elias and Gil on "Toda Menina Baiana" is Elias' daughter, singer-songwriter Amanda Brecker. New to Elias' team is percussionist Marivaldo dos Santos, drummer Rafael Barata, guitarists Romero Lubambo and Ross Traut, and flutist Lawrence Feldman.
