Ilũvatar… remember the name? Chances are if you happened to discover the growing underground US progressive rock scene in the early 1990's, you no doubt happened to stumble upon this very special band from Maryland. Both their self-titled debut from 1994 and 1995's follow-up Children showed Iluvatar's penchant for melodic prog, clearly influenced by classic British acts such as Genesis, IQ, Marillion, Pendragon, and Pink Floyd. After 1999's A Story Two Days Wide…, the bands output became quite sporadic, with the occasional festival appearance popping up but no new recorded material… until now…

Echoes from the Greek Bronze Age is the result of much that the author has read over several years. It is a study of the thoughts and works of early thinkers, from Hecataeus the early cartographer, to Herodotus survey of the then 'known world,' the thoughts of Anaxagoras, Xenophon s descriptions, and the sayings of Xenophanes.

Acclaimed upholders of the African American ring shout, the McIntosh County Shouters keep the faith, form, and fervor of the generations-old tradition rooted in their small community of coastal Georgia. Companion songs to the shuffle-step devotional movement called “shouting” have resisted slavery, strengthened spirit, and left us a cultural keystone for the future. Through their classic shout songs and spirituals, the Shouters beckon us to remember the past while envisioning the future of the African American cultural legacy.

Whenever he was asked to name his own personal favorite within his long and distinguished oeuvre, Jerry Goldsmith inevitably cited his work on 1977's obscure Ernest Hemingway adaptation Islands in the Stream. A lush, often melancholy score evoking both the serenity and the treachery of the sea, it is undoubtedly Goldsmith's most intimate effort, eschewing the larger-than-life drama and suspense of his best-known soundtracks. Islands in the Stream is above all a showcase for the composer's consummate ability to vividly communicate both the physical and emotional landscape in such simple yet precise strokes – employing little but a lone French horn, Goldsmith's main theme captures the immense loneliness and solitude of George C. Scott's protagonist, while gentle woodwinds suggest the ocean waves lapping the shore of his island home.

From The Vile Catacombs isn’t just the coolest album name this side of Iced Earth’s Plagues Of Babylon (2014), it’s also Ra’s Dawn return, of sorts. Notwithstanding rather feeble debut Scales Of Judgement (2006) and admittedly far more stable sophomore effort At The Gates Of Dawn (2009), the German prog metallers, ever with a penchant for the lore of the ancient Egyptians, have taken their sweet time in creating album number three, and done so with nary a fuck to give as to what the critics may think. The album proves to an enjoyable listen as at eight tracks and just under 50 minutes it manages to fly by rather swiftly, an attest to its better qualities as I find myself wanting more.
