One of the giants of the alto saxophone, Johnny Hodges was perhaps the most important soloist and sideman in Duke Ellington's orchestra from 1928 up to Hodges' death in 1970. The self-taught player made many solo forays during his long career - one of his '50s outfits included a young John Coltrane - but history remembers Hodges for his virtuosic sidemanship, particularly his sensitive rendering of ballads.

An amalgamation of swampy blues, jazz and rock - all mixed and recorded in a sparse, bloomy and eerie sort of way. This recording is just so damn fine, so airy and warm. And the musician's aboard on this Dennis Hopper film are a who's who, including Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Roy Rodgers, Earl Palmer and Tim Drummond. This has long been a highly sought after and collectible album among audiophiles. A true demonstration record.

Recorded around the same time as her groundbreaking work with Louis Armstrong, this album is representative of Fitzgerald's best vocal work. Recorded over a two-day period in October, 1957, Fitzgerald sings familiar ballads on this release accompanied by lush orchestral arrangements courtesy of Frank DeVol, with tenor sax legend Stan Getz contributing to four songs.

Inception" is McCoy Tyner's debut album, released on Impulse! in 1962. His trio members on this session are Art Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, all three working outside the confines of John Coltrane's quartet. Four of the six songs on this recording are Tyner originals; Effendi, the lovely ballad Sunset and the title tune have all been called "standout pieces" by JazzTimes.

Viktoria Mullova and John Eliot Gardiner: Mullova, a strong-toned, intense, and very virtuosic Russian violinist living in the West, an individualist without a trace of idiosyncrasy and a expressivist without a trace of sentimentality, and Gardiner, a superb proponent of period instruments who's out of his depths with passionate expressivity, an excellent exponent of Handel and Bach who's over his head with Beethoven or Berlioz, a conducting collection of idiosyncrasies passing himself off as an interpreter and an amateur passing himself off as an individualist.

Influential and innovative jazz pianist Bill Evans took time off from his regular trio to record Empathy with drummer Shelly Manne (who shares equal billing) and bassist Monty Budwig. Critics noted that the impromptu collaboration seemed to loosen Evans up, inspiring a lighter, freer and more relaxed performance on this album than on his previous recordings with his usual bandmates.

Essential: A masterpiece of Progressive-Folk music
The Young Tradition was formed on 18 April 1965 by Peter Bellamy (8 September 1944 – 19 September 1991), Royston Wood (born 1935 died 8 April 1990) and Heather Wood (born Arielle Heather Wood, 31 March 1945, Attercliffe, Sheffield, Yorkshire) (who was unrelated to Royston Wood). Most of their repertoire was traditional British folk music, sung without instrumental accompaniment, and was drawn especially from the music of the Copper Family from Sussex, who had a strong oral musical tradition. They augmented the pure folk music with some composed songs which were strongly rooted in the English folk tradition, such as sea shanties written by Cyril Tawney, of which “Chicken on a Raft” was the most notable.
