Having Mickie Most as producer could be a double-edged sword. On The Hurdy Gurdy Man, his over-ambitious nature and scattershot production sense occasionally sabotaged Donovan's songs rather than emphasizing their strengths…

This set makes a nice introduction to Donovan's peak years in the mid- to late '60s, including both his Baroque flower power material for Epic Records like "Sunshine Superman" and the fairy tale funky "Hurdy Gurdy Man" as well as his earlier and more folky recordings for Pye Records (they were released in the U.S. by Hickory Records) like "Catch the Wind," "Colours," the stylistically prescient "Sunny Goodge Street," and the beautiful "Turquoise" (which is as gorgeous as it is ridiculous). The sides included here are perfect examples of Donovan's unique Woody Guthrie meets Timothy Leary style, and having both the Pye and Epic material side by side is a definite plus.

In 1976 Steve recorded the album "L" with Todd Rundgren producing. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the Steve Hillage Band which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976. Following the live debut the band played numerous live concerts including a concert in Germany in early 1977 for German television. This recording is considered to be the ear that Hillage was at his creative best, following on from the release of his Virgin album L. Highlights include the cover version of Donovans Hurdy Gurdy Man a true Psychedelic work out. A must for all psyc and prog rock fans…

The other night I rented the movie Zodiac and watched it for the first time. Having missed it during its theatrical run, I had looked forward to watching it for some time. So anyway, one of the first things I picked up on about the movie was its very inventive use of the music from the same time period the gruesome serial murders occured in Northern California — stuff like Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" for example.
