Punk combo Discount was formed in early 1995 by singer Alison Mosshart, guitarist Ryan Seagrist, bassist James, and drummer Bill Nesper, all junior high school students in the Vero Beach, FL, area. Despite their youth, the group began regularly gigging throughout Florida and soon self-released their debut cassette, Mom Lied to Me; a copy of the tape eventually found its way to Liquid Meat Records honcho Tim Lyman, and in 1996 the label issued the 7" EP Wonder Pulled Me Under followed by the full-length Ataxia's Alright Tonight.

The Models of Space, Time and Vision in Vladimir Nabokov's Fiction: Narrative Strategies and Cultural Frames (Tartu Semiotics Library) by Marina Grishakova
English | Dec. 2, 2006 | ISBN: 9949113067 | 323 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

Because of his rejection of socio-political engagement, Vladimir Nabokov is often regarded as a virtuouso artist of the ivory-tower variety, aloof from the contemporary march of the minds. Marina Grishakova's book, however, points to the relationship between his narrative techniques and some of the scientific, metaphysical, and ethical ideas on the inner agenda of the twentieth century. It connects Nabokov's handling of time, space, and perspective in his fiction with the philosophical models constructed by his contemporaries, also showing in what ways he may have been ahead of his time.

Following the example of some of their fellow-countrymen of the late Seventies (Nightwinds, Infinity…), Netherworld could create a kind of music with a high quality, inspired by the best bands in this style (Genesis and ELP for example), with a particular virtuosity and energy. A little like Twelfth Night, this band combines vocal theatrical intonation, guitar arpeggios, energetic and emphatic keyboards, with multiple breaks and high-velocity solos. All of this is included in a very well composed and structured music.

In 1918 Ezra Pound coined the term ‘Victoriana’ as a way of pejoratively characterising the Victorian past: ‘For most of us, the odour of defunct Victoriana is so unpleasant ... that we are content to leave the past where we find it’ (cited in Gardiner, 2004: 168). In stark contrast to Pound’s confident marginalisation of the Victorian past at the outset of the twentieth century, a steady interest in things Victorian gained momentum in the second half of the same century until, in the final decades, a fascination with the period invaded film, television, trends in interior decoration, fashion, genealogy, advertising, museums, historical re-enactments, politics and scholarship about the Victorian period.
