During the 1985 Live Aid concert, it gave an opportunity for many bands that had established a cult following to come out and play on the world stage. Perhaps one band that benefited from this more than any other band was Dire Straits. Dire Straits' live performance of "Money for Nothing" and "Sultans of Swing" clearly elevated the band to superstar status. It was also the momentum from Live Aid that propelled "Money For Nothing" to #1 song status and the album "Brothers in Arms" to #1 album status.

The production value is very high. There is a nice opening sequence where the band and roadies arrive at the venue, and get ready to put on the show. The DVD uses this sequence to introduce the players, showing them getting off of busses, walking down corridors, and other mundane predatory actions. Knopfler walks out to a very enthusiastic crowd and after a few seconds of thunderous applause launches into the first song. I was very happy (as a guitar player myself) that many of his solos were shown in close-up detail. I like little things like that, seeing how he works to get that sound. I will not go over every song, but just be sure, there is not a single piece of filler here, although there would be a couple of songs that might be considered MIA. I could not imagine seeing B.B. King in concert without his performing "The Thrill is Gone", so seeing Dire Straits and not having them perform the break through "Sultans of Swing", the song that introduced them to the world is a bit strange. Oh well, you can't have everything. There is a good mix of rockers, softer more mellow songs and plenty of opportunity for Knopfler to let the other members of the band show off a bit. Overall, a great performance.

It’s a pointed fact that live albums are a tricky business, if not a flat-out risky one. Orchestral live albums? Urgh. Overblown and highfalutin, they’re too often the errant result of deliriously daft backstage ideas after a band enjoys their rider a little too much, too often. With thin ideas bloated by commercial success, they’re the foie gras of rock. Think Metallica, ELP, and Yes; indulgent doesn’t begin to cover it. In tight times, amidst a forensic focus on social media “reach”, streaming figures, and brand synergy, what sort of act would think that such a baroque and involved treatment of their songs would be a good idea? Step forward Lanterns On The Lake.

Includes a bonus DVD. When Sting embarked on his solo career, he didn't throw his tenure with the Police out the window; on this live double album from his Dream of the Blue Turtles tour, he reworks some odd selections from his old band's catalog in the expansive, jazz-inflected style of his new crew (which included saxophonist Branford Marsalis). These performances emphasize showmanship (solos, backup singers, and all) and they've got lots of crowd-pleasing moments, like the overwhelming swell of 'I Burn for You' and a Caribbean clap-along on a medley of 'One World' and 'Love Is the Seventh Wave'. The bonus DVD provides the viewer with a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of the band at work. The film observes Sting and his new band as they rehearse and then perform their first concert, in Paris.
