In spring 1976, a 19-year-old beauty, her German-born mother, and her crippled father move to the town of a firefighter nicknamed Pin-Pon. Everyone notices the provocative Eliane. She singles out Pin-Pon and soon is crying on his shoulder (she's myopic and hates her reputation as a dunce and as easy); she moves in with him, knits baby clothes, and plans their wedding. Is this love or some kind of plot? She asks Pin-Pon's mother and aunt about the piano in the barn: who delivered it on a November night in 1955? Why does she want to know, and what does it have to do with her mother's sorrows, her father's injury, this quick marriage, and the last name on her birth certificate?

After summing up his maverick tendencies on Scary Monsters, David Bowie aimed for the mainstream with Let's Dance. Hiring Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers as a co-producer, Bowie created a stylish, synthesized post-disco dance music that was equally informed by classic soul and the emerging new romantic subgenre of new wave, which was ironically heavily inspired by Bowie himself. Let's Dance comes tearing out of the gate, propulsed by the skittering "Modern Love," the seductively menacing "China Girl," and the brittle funk of the title track…

Eddie and the Cruisers is a 1983 American film directed by Martin Davidson based on the novel by P.F. Kluge. The story concerns the mysterious death of a fictional '60s rock star. Though the film received mixed reviews when it first opened in theaters it was rereleased nine months later on cable TV with great success. After screenings on HBO in 1984, the album suddenly climbed the charts, going quadruple platinum. The main song in the film, "On the Dark Side," was the number one song in the country on Billboard's Mainstream, Rock, and Heatseeker charts; and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Another single from the film, "Tender Years," peaked at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100. John Cafferty was hired to write a few songs for the film based on Davidson’s description of his fictitious band and their music. Initially, he said that the Cruisers sounded like Dion and The Belmonts, but with elements of Jim Morrison and The Doors. The Cruisers were essentially a Jersey bar band, and he thought of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The film needed music that contained elements of these three bands. Cafferty did such a good job of capturing the feeling of the 1960s and 1980s that Davidson asked him to score the entire film. Only Michael "Tunes" Antunes, the tenor saxophone player for the Beaver Brown Band, and Helen Schneider were professional musicians in the cast.

1983 is an impressive album of previously unavailable, professional live recordings (the sound is as good as a studio recording) of Von Zamla's 1983 spring tour, which the band regards as among some of their most successful performances. This is the first time any Von Zamla works have been released in the U.S., and it's an especially timely reissue given the increasing crossover between orchestral modern composition and rock (the Rachel's and Godspeed You Black Emperor! being the most then-recent examples; Frank Zappa being an earlier and, for Von Zamla, a clearly influential one)…
