Since making his debut as a leader with 2001's At Last, Marcus Strickland has established a reputation as a composer of remarkable depth and breadth. On Nihil Novi, his first Blue Note offering, Strickland showcases a new band – trumpeter Keyon Harrold, keyboardists Mitch Henry and Masayuki Hirano, bassist Kyle Miles, and drummer Charles Haynes. His new tunes offer an even greater array of styles, harmonic textures, and dynamics, and reveal his preoccupation with hip-hop beatmaking. (This isn't a jazz/hip-hop fusion record.) Nihil Novi was expertly and empathetically produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, who also guests on bass. Strickland also brings in some old friends and allies, including Robert Glasper, Chris Dave, Pino Palladino, and Chris Bruce.

Saxophonist Marcus Strickland makes his Blue Note debut with Nihil Novi produced by Meshell Ndegeocello & featuring contributions from vocalist Jean Baylor, pianist Robert Glasper, bassist Pino Palladino, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, and drummers Chris Dave and Charles Haynes. The thoughtful & funky album defies genre by blurring the line between jazz & R&B, and the promotional campaign will reach beyond jazz into urban and general music outlets. Strickland will tour the U.S. & Europe this year.

KMFDM's seventh album, Nihil, finds the band sitting comfortably in the groove it started with 1990s Naive. At this point, the German outfit has become an industrial musical collective, with various contributing vocalists and musicians coming in and out of the fold, while the nerve center of the group continues to be founders En Esch and Sasha Konietzko. Additionally, the group's ingenious marketing/merchandising skills (using the bold-faced KMFDM logo, idealistic sloganeering, and appropriately simplistic comic book artwork of Brute) have given the band a powerful, iconic image.

French metallers DAGOBA will release their fifth album, "Post Mortem Nihil Est", in Europe on May 27 via Verycords and in North America on June 14 through earMUSIC. The cover artwork for the CD was created by Seth Siro Anton. Produced by former MACHINE HEAD/SOULFLY guitarist Logan Mader in Los Angeles, "Post Mortem Nihil Est"s two grand opening tracks, "When Winter…" and "The Realm Black", raise the bar for the rest of the album yet the remaining songs are definitely able to match the high standard. "Kiss Me Kraken", with its strong, harmonious chorus, blends perfectly with the hard black metal, whereas the single, "The Great Wonder", confirms that "Post Mortem Nihil Est" contains a whole arsenal of heavy weapons ready to destroy everything in its path.

Music for Holy Week. François Couperin's 'Leçons de Ténèbres' (c. 1713-17), a setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, fused devotional expression with a dramatic performing style embodied here by sopranos Lucy Crowe and Elizabeth Watts. Two Trio Sonatas and a 'Stabat Mater' by Sébastien de Brossard round out this luminous programme.

Inspiration, a word much loved by Romantic novelists writing about composers, would be regarded with some scepticism by the composers themselves. When we say a work is inspired it is a verdict on the music, not a description of the state of mind of the composer; thus the image of Handel composing his Messiah in a mystical frenzy is spoiled by reality — which has him foraging among the manuscripts of Italian love-duets written the previous year for music that could easily be converted into choruses. it is preferable to use the word “stimulus". Debussy’s imagination was stimulated by the sea to write La Mer, Beethoven was stimulated by the concepts of Brotherhood of Man and of Joy to write the Ninth Symphony. Bach was stimulated by the idea of writing pieces in the 24 available major and minor keys, so much so that he did it twice over in the 48 Preludes and Fugues.
