With a well-received studio album in the form of The First Day issued in summer 1993, Sylvian/Fripp took to the road for a lengthy tour to support the release. Trey Gunn reprised his role from the earlier tour and studio recordings as stick player, while Pat Mastelotto joined the group on drums, a position which led to his being offered a role in the 1990s King Crimson, a band in which he has remained a member of every line-up since. Producer and recordings artist Michael Brook completed the touring ensemble.
Following on from their glorious and lyrical collaborative work on Gone To Earth, David Sylvian and Robert Fripp produced the unexpectedly fiery and funky The First Day in 1993. Hypnotically groovy and intensely vicious, while showcasing Fripp's Soundscapes identity, the album marked a departure for Sylvian and can be more easily understood as a missing King Crimson link between Three Of A Perfect Pair and Thrak than a typical post-Japan Sylvian venture.
Released to highly positive reviews in 2007, Slope was the debut album from Steve Jansen (Japan / Rain Tree Crow). Exhibiting a bold combination of inventive rhythms, intricate programming and emotive vocal performances, the album features guest contributions from an impressive line-up including David Sylvian, Tim Elsenburg (Sweet Billy Pilgrim), Joan Wasser (Joan As Policewoman), Thomas Feiner, Anja Garbarek, Nina Kinert, and Theo Travis. As Jansen explains, "With Slope, I approached composition attempting to avoid chord and song structures and the usual familiar building blocks. Instead, in an attempt to deviate from my own trappings as a musician, I wanted to piece together unrelated sounds, music samples, rhythms and 'events'."
This reissue of Alchemy is a thoughtful one- comprising the original 1985 tape-only release that saw tracks Preperation for a Journey & Steel Cathedrals released alongside the Words with the Shaman ep with the hard to find b-sides to 1989's Pop Song single (found on the deleted Weatherbox set). As a collection of Sylvian's instrumental work, it blends together very well- though anyone who didn't enjoy his other instrumental work (the Czuckay albums Flux&Mutability / Plight&Premonition, the last sides of Gone to Earth) may not be that enamoured.
The last album with Rob Dean, Gentlemen Take Polaroids was also unquestionably the album in which Japan truly found its own unique voice and aesthetic approach. The glam influences still hung heavy, particularly from Roxy Music, but now the band found itself starting to affect others in turn. Even the back cover photo says as much – looking cool in glossy, elegant nightwear, the quintet had a clear impact on Duran Duran, to the point where Nick Rhodes obviously was trying to be Sylvian in appearance.
A Victim Of Stars 1982-2012 brings together the last 30 years of David Sylvian's solo career, encompassing material released with Virgin Records, along with more recent work released on his own label Samadhisound, including a new recording 'Where's Your Gravity?' which is exclusive to this compilation. The package comes as a trifold double disc set with insert. Note that Ghosts is the remixed version released in 2000 from the 'Everything and Nothing' Compilation, however 'Remix' is not mentioned on the CD, packaging nor folded track sheet.
A predominately instrumental compilation album, a companion piece to 'Everything And Nothing', this release also featured a number of remixes and previously unreleased material. The original 2002 limited edition release also included a remix of the 'Plight and Premonition' CD. Limited edition comes in a digipack with a bonus CD. Beautiful packaging. 'Booklet' is a fold-out poster, with a magnificent picture by Kevin Westenberg. Album is dedicated to David's manager and best friend, Richard Chadwick and to Declan Colgan. Design of the artwork is (of course) by Russell Mills, with assistance of Michael Webster.
A number of the tracks have been given a subtle remix by David to bring them in line with his personal requirements while others have been given more obvious updates and changes. All the material has been completely remastered. Like everything else he does, musical iconoclast David Sylvian's idea of a retrospective compilation is very different from the norm. Sleepwalkers is a 16-track, hour-plus collection focused on his many collaborations during the previous decade. Included are alternate takes from his own albums, remixes, reworked material and his contributions to the albums of others.
A Prince protege, Chavez (David Sylvian's ex wife) made news when she claimed she'd written, but received no credit for, Madonna's "Justify My Love" (Chavez was proved in the right). Her style is unusual, consisting of breathy spoken passages over a heavy dance beat. Her self-titled debut album could lead to greater things. …this product was recorded, cut and mixed by the legendary Michael Koppelman. Ingrid's claim to fame is that she brought that exotic, sultry spoken lyrical feel (see Madonna's Justify My Love and Janet's spoken parts on songs like That's the Way Love Goes and her own tunes in Graffiti Bridge) to female pop music.
