In 1938, jazz aficionado/promoter/producer John Hammond, Sr. had an idea for a visionary concert. This vision would take fruition as a presentation known as "From Spirituals to Swing," bringing together the connected history of African-American music running from gospel to blues to jazz.
Hip-O Select's 2004 compilation Get It While You Can: The Complete Legendary Verve Sessions is not the first time Howard Tate's revered sessions for Verve have reached CD. About ten years earlier, in the summer of 1995, Mercury released the almost identically titled Get It While You Can: The Legendary Verve Sessions, which contained all of Tate's 1966 debut – also titled Get It While You Can – along with five bonus tracks, for a total of 17 cuts.
This album brings together the only recorded sessions that Chet Baker and Bill Evans shared, together, yes, but with other great musicians as Herbie Mann, Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell and Zoot Sims among others. The records were held in New York in two sessions during 1958 and 1959. Whoever possesses the records 'The lyrical trumpet of Chet Baker' and 'Chet Baker plays the best of Lerner & Loewe', already has fourteen of the fifteen tracks on the album, except for the bonus in which the pianist Bob Corwin replaces Evans ('Almost like being in love').
Digitally remastered two CD set containing the complete legendary 1964 Bremen concert for the first time on CD. Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy's complete long unavailable April 16, 1964 Bremen concert was originally issued only on three hard to find LPs. This splendid performance was the last complete concert featuring Johnny Coles with the group (he would collapse due to a stomach ulcer the following day while playing in Paris and had to leave the band). Includes 12-page booklet.
Karajan’s Deutsche Grammophon complete recordings is recorded on chronological order. It becomes ordering limited production.
Here's an easy call: these are the finest recordings of these works currently available. In reviewing the individual releases, I had perhaps one small reservation concerning the disc containing Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4, but this evaporates in the face of the achievement as a whole. Both cycles, the Bachianas Brasileiras and the Choros, constitute two of the most original, colorful, and enjoyable collections of works by any 20th-century composer. They belong in every serious record collection, and they have never been so consistently well performed and recorded. At last, Villa-Lobos' compatriots have managed to do his quirky genius full justice. The excellent disc of solo guitar music makes a fine and thoughtful bonus, and at seven discs for the price of three, you'd have to be insane not to grab this set immediately.
